The only way the NYT owners, editors and reporters could possibly know which of the many troops picked up in Afghanistan are mere footsoldiers is if they ALSO know who all of the commanders are.
Time for the NYT to come across with that information. Or, maybe they would like a session in Guantanamo ~ it might loosen their tongues!

Does the Times, against the weight of evidence and rationality, always have to give the benefit of the doubt to America's enemies?Obviously, the anti-American editors at the New York Times believe they do.
