No, his obfuscatory comments re: abortion and guns and a strong military are intended to sway swing voters who have a short attention span. The leftists know these statements are just game-playing and don't even need to be accompanied by a sly wink.
You're both right of course. To conservatives, voting records do matter. Truth matters. Obviously the blonde soccer mom contingent and hard core leftists couldn't care less.
