A DAY IN THE LIFE OF PRESIDENT BUSH (photos) 7.5.2004

The President flew from Camp David, using the Hagerstown, MD airport, to Charleston, WV, but not before he and accompanying staff and Cabinet members had to change jets. AF1 had a faulty engine and another jet had to be flown from Andrews AFB for the President and his entourage to use.

The President missed a Church service that he had planned on attending in WV, but said that he didn't miss it because of the sermon but because of a faulty engine and necessary jet change.

He spoke to an enthusiastic crowd in Charleston, where applause interrupted his speech after just about every sentence. In the pictures, notice the number of American flags - it seemed that everyone had one.

AWESOME photos of our very PATRIOTIC president!!

The following are articles from the local Charleston papers that covered the President's speech yesterday. [Note: While the two papers differed relative to their crowd estimates, the police put the OFFICIAL attendance at approximately 7,000!]

EXCERPT FROM ARTICLE ONE:

President vows to stand
tall against terrorism

Josh Hafenbrack
Daily Mail Capitol reporter

Monday July 05, 2004

Before thousands of flag-waving West Virginians on America's 228th birthday, President Bush vowed to confront terrorism around the globe, even as he struck optimistic tones about the strength of the nation's democracy and the war on terrorism.

America will "engage enemies around the world, so we do not have to face them here at home," Bush said to thunderous applause from the partisan crowd.

"You can't talk sense into them. You can't negotiate with them. You cannot hope for the best with these people. We must be relentless and determined to do our duty."

The president's third visit to West Virginia this year also was notable for its local flavor. Bush took time in his 27-minute speech to name-drop politicians, military officials and community activists.

In his second Fourth of July visit as president, Bush, speaking in the shadow of the gold Capitol dome, said on Sunday that America's founding fathers would be proud of the nation they helped create.

"Opportunity is common," the president said, calling America "a country full of promise and hope."

America, the president said, is "a nation that stands strong against violent men."

It's a country of "strong values, faith in the Lord and love in our families," Bush said. "They'd not only find them strong all over the country, they'd find them very strong in West Virginia."

EXCERPT FROM ARTICLE TWO:

Bush lauds W.Va.'s role
President says coal important
to keep U.S. independent

Chris Stirewalt
Daily Mail Political Editor

Monday July 05, 2004

In a time of uncertainty around the globe, West Virginia can find a path to prosperity by combining old industries with new technologies, President Bush said.

In a 15-minute interview with the Daily Mail prior to his Independence Day speech at the state Capitol, Bush said that in a post-9/11 world, West Virginia had a special role to play.

"In order for us to be less dependent on foreign sources of crude (oil), we have to be wise about how we use the resources we have," Bush said. "And a major resource we have is coal -- something you know a good bit about in West Virginia."

Bush said America's habit of importing 60 percent of its oil has serious implications for national security.

The president said energy independence would come through a variety of means, including new technologies that would allow the country to "grow our way out of dependence." He cited the more than $2 billion already spent on clean coal technologies during his time in office.

Bush blasted lawmakers for "playing politics" with his administration's proposed energy bill. He said if the measure were in place, West Virginia would benefit from increased reliance on coal for electricity.

Even without the bill, Bush said West Virginia was in a good situation to capitalize on changing American priorities. Bush said the real challenge for the state was to branch out.

"West Virginia must never abandon her strength, which is her ability to produce energy and steel," Bush said. "But the leadership here understands that they must diversify their economy into the new jobs."

He cited health care and homeland security as two areas where the state could see job growth, citing recent research gains in both areas that had come out of the Mountain State.

"But you've also got a fantastic opportunity to promote tourism in West Virginia," Bush said. "The more mobile Americans become, they're going to choose to come to places where they can exercise or fish and enjoy the outdoors. West Virginia is a beautiful place."

EXCERPT FROM ARTICLE THREE:

We must be relentless,’ Bush says

At Capitol, president trumpets vision of hope in Afghanistan, Iraq

By Scott Finn
Staff Writer

In his second Fourth of July visit to West Virginia in three years, President Bush called on Americans to “do our duty” and support wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as part of the larger war against terrorism.

“You can’t talk sense to these people. You can’t negotiate with them,” Bush told more than 3,000 supporters gathered in the courtyard of the state Capitol building Sunday afternoon.

“We must be relentless and determined to do our duty,” he said, to some of the biggest cheers of his speech.

Bush’s spent most of his 25-minute speech on Iraq, Afghanistan and the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, linking them together.

After the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Bush said, “the nation resolved to fight terrorists where they dwelled.”

“Because we acted, Afghanistan is a rising democracy,” he said, and “Iraq is a free and sovereign nation.”

A bipartisan commission investigating the Sept. 11 attacks found no evidence linking Saddam Hussein’s regime to the attacks by Osama bin Laden’s terrorist network, al-Qaida.

Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney assert that there were contacts between Saddam’s regime and al-Qaida. Last week, Cheney said Saddam sent a general to Afghanistan to train al-Qaida operatives in bomb-making and forgery.

During his speech, Bush said he has researched Charleston’s history, and found out George Washington owned land in the area.

“I call him George W.,” Bush said, to laughs. He later compared the nation’s founders and their struggle to form a new nation with the struggles of the new government of Iraq.

Great pictures, Truthy. Thank you so much for all the hard work.

Altura, totally agree with you about Lynn Cheney. She is a very accomplished and intelligent woman with a pretty impressive resume.

Hope everybody had a wonderful 4th.

JUST WANTED TO GIVE EVERYONE A HEADS UP:

Matthew Dowd, the President's pollster, is forewarning Republicans that Kerry will probably receive a 15 point BOUNCE in the polls from the VP announcement/Democrat Convention. [This estimate is based on historical trends!]

Here's my assessment of this announcement (as posted on another thread):

At EVERY stage of the election process, MANAGING EXPECTATIONS IS THE NAME OF THE GAME!!

For this reason, it was IMPERATIVE that Dowd publicize the 'bounce' data that Gallup, et al, would have published any way.

The Bush campaign will get two immediate benefits from Dowd's announcement:

1.) Regardless of the bounce Kerry gets -- as yes, Virginia, the media-entertainment-education cabal will MAKE SURE he gets a BIG bounce -- AP, Reuters, AFP, UPI, the alphabet channels, and so on, will be forced to include as part of their analysis that the Bush campaign/historical trends predicted a Kerry bounce and that such a bounce is typically transitory! [NOTE: By establishing "15 points" as the benchmark for Kerry, anything less will now be viewed as a negative for Kerry and a positive for Bush!]

NOTE: How will the media-entertainment-education cabal make sure Kerry gets a BIG BOUNCE? a.) Cabal pollsters will couple their standard (4-14 point)oversampling/overweighting of Democrats and Independents with 'special sauce'/push polling techniques designed to CREATE the desired double-digit bounce, and b.) Cabal media outlets (electronic and paper) will give their candidate 24/7 saturation coverage -- if the President gets 5 seconds of their time it will be to provide the public with an obligatory trashing of his Iraq policies!

2.) Republicans are now emotionally/psychologically prepared for THE BOUNCE! If it happens, no big deal -- we expected it; if it doesn't happen, great -- what a pleasant surprise!! Either way, the campaign has masterfully neutered the media's ability to demoralize our base!!

FYI: The campaign has already begun the next 'management' project -- creating the expectation that Kerry is a master debater. Remember, Gore lost the debates because voters expected A LOT from him and very little from Bush -- we want to establish the same expectations for this year's debates!!!

BTW: Given that the media-entertainment-education cabal has been savaging the President in a manner not seen since the days of Lincoln and Truman (presidents who were also immersed in DIFFICULT wars), I believe Rove deserves mega kudos both for cementing the president's base (over 90% approval with approximately 80% STRONGLY supporting the President's re-election -- a record for contemporary presidential campaigns) and for keeping the race TIGHT! A lesser president and a lesser campaign would be down by double digits at this point -- as were Lincoln and Truman!

So, don't despair when the polls look awful for the President this month and into next -- this is all to be expected! We must remain confident and committed!!

I am sooooooooooooooooo impressed -- the President, the President's mother, the First Lady, and now the Vice President!!! I want to hear EVERY detail this Saturday (remember to bring pictures)!!!!!

I understand that you're going to host a "Party for President Bush" on July 15!

IS ANYONE IN THE CINCY AREA PLANNING A PARTY? If you're not attending a party and want to do so, let me know -- we should coordinate something!! I would love both to support the President and to hear the First Lady share her thoughts via telephone hook-up!!

I'm BAAAAAAck.

I didn't realize that "Yeager" Airport in Charleston was named for Chucj, until you brought it to my attention.

Frankly, I'm a Scott Crossfield fan of the X-15 test jets. He was MY man, my hero.

All the articles I saved about space flight - well, it was what was available at the time, - I never noticed Chuck Yeager's name. I know - I know, to some folks, this is heresy. But that's what I knew.

WooHoo! Great pics, OWF!! I'm so glad you got to meet them and shake their hands.

Those pics didn't show up anywhere on Yahoo, Ruters or AP. I guess the only way to have gotten them might have been to go to an Ohio paper, but even then..........OR be there, like YOU were!

Congratulatons.

Man oh man, one of these days, I'm gonna get the chance to shake the President's or the Veep's hand. It's MY turn.

From what I've heard, the President and the Veep pack them in - every seat that is available is taken.

OTOH, the other guy? The cameras have to be careful not to show the entire room or venue, as they would show empty, empty, empty spaces!!!

Says sompin' doesn't it?
