NEW YORK, June 16 (UPI) -- Convicted child killer Joel Steinberg plans to take an internship with a tabloid-style, cable TV show in New York after his release from prison.

The former lawyer served 17 years in an upstate New York prison for beating to death his illegally adopted, 6-year-old daughter, Lisa, and was denied parole five times, USA Today reported Wednesday.

He is scheduled for release June 30 and plans to take a $250-a-week internship as a reporter for "New York Confidential," the newspaper said.

"We're interested in a lot of different people, scandalous people ... who can do stories and have a totally different view on everything," show spokesman James Edstrom said. "He'll start as an intern, and if he can handle it, he may end up being a reporter along with other people."

Part of Steinberg's wages is expected to go to Lisa's biological mother, who paid him $500 to find a good adoptive family for her little girl and was awarded $15 million in damages from a civil lawsuit she filed against Steinberg and various city agencies.
