Nattering Nabobs

Nattering Nabobs

"In the United States today, we have more than our share of the nattering nabobs of negativism. They have formed their own 4-H Club ... the "hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history.", Vice President Spiro T. Agnew

Never has this been so true. As our nation prepared for war with Iraq the left's battle cry could be heard across the nation: "This is going to be bad", quickly followed by nay-sayers predicting: A long, bloody ground war against the infamous "Republican Guard"

When Iraqi military units were either destroyed or dissolved and we entered Baghdad, the nay-sayers began predicting: Our soldiers would be slaughtered in house-to-house battles and the civilian population would rise up to fight beside their soldiers.

When we entered Baghdad and the vast majority of Iraqi citizens began tearing down Saddam Hussein posters, greeting American soldiers, and cheering the removal of Saddam's statue in the square, the nay-sayers began predicting: We'll never catch Saddam or his thugs plus their henchmen will ultimately run us out of the country.

When we restored power and water services, re-opened schools, broadcast radio and television resumed, most of Hussein's lackeys were found and Hussein himself was pulled from a hole in the ground, the nay-sayers began predicting: A military "occupation" that would last for a decade or more ...

As we prepared to turn Iraq over to an Iraqi government with plans for future democratic elections and a coalition government including support from Shiite leaders , the nay-sayers began predicting: Terrorists will never allow a turn-over to a civilian government.

Then we turned power over the civilian government, before the announced date and short-circuiting whatever plans the terrorists had. The nay-sayers haven't had much time to make predictions, but here are some notable outbursts:

A moronic leftist talk-show host actually said "When you have a government that is appointed in the dark of night ... and then the pro-council, a person who appoints it, takes off ...". As Neal Boortz pointed out, it was the middle of the night here in the United States, not in Iraq. A former U.S. Army General declared the new government illegitimate because the turnover was done secretly and Iraqi citizens wouldn't know about the new government. He must have been sleeping when the event was broadcast on T.V. and radio an hour after the event - both inside and outside Iraq.

As the days pass, we're sure the "nattering-nabobs" will continue to come up with the next litany of horrible outcomes that will just as surely fail to materialize.

Neal cut's to the chase, as usual.

One of these days, I'll have a T-shirt made up that says, "Spiro Agnew Was Right."

"As Neal Boortz pointed out, it was the middle of the night here in the United States, not in Iraq."

I remember a leftist professor discussing the shootdown of KAL 007. He had spun this incredible conspiracy theory about the Cobra Dane radar site in Shemya, a missile test, and how the Cobra Dane radar was tracking KAL 007.

I pointed out that there was only one itty-bitty-teensy-weeny flaw with his theory.

His theory required the Earth to be flat.

Same problem, again.

Don't mark him up as articulate, witty and onomatopoetic just yet. William Safire wrote that speech.
