AND,
I suggest making a game with children
OF DRILLS.
Various kinds of drills for various kinds of emergencies.
Some things need to become 2nd nature for all concerned.
Break major disaster situations down into maybe 5 minute sequences and drill that 5 min section until it's learned. Then drill all the fitting segments together.
Young children can have it all cast as an exercise, adventure with fantasy animal characters if need be. No need to rachet fear up. The important thing is to train actions, habits and at least a willingness to run with instructions without arguing or foot dragging when the time comes.
Review each exercise with all concerned asking each person how it can be made better the next time on everyone's part. Insure as a group that the main goals for each situation are known and owned by each family member able to comprehend them.
Corrie Ten Boom's HIDING PLACE has an example of the sort of drill that could be necessary in some situations.
The important thing is PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE until it's at least somewhat automatic. This can be a LIFE-SAVING antedote to the anxiety and fear real crises can engender, incapacitating some types of personalities.
It's also wise to observe in such exercises, which family member tracks best in such situations. Which family members think best on their feet regarding which factors and contingencies. Go with such strengths and cover one another's weaknesses without petty ego battles.
May God give all willing souls His wisdom in all such situations.
Does anyone need examples of the types of drills to do? Probably ExSoldier would be better at examples than I but let us know and we'll see what we can do, if needed.
Right, ExS?
