Bush moving to replace Cheney done before Kerry's picking Hillary could not hurt him. Done afterward, it makes Bush look desperate. I think we should take Dubya at his word; Cheney remains the VP.
That said, I don't think anybody can help Kerry in the South. A poll the other day claimed that the Christian Right was more mobilized and committed than Unions and the left. A Hillary pick would energize both the left and the right, and there are more on the left than there are of us.
I don't think Hillary has a choice but to run. A loss doesn't hurt her, and a Kerry win without her does. It's the smart play.
