For how else can the public judge their fitness for that trust if not through their private dealings?

How about by their public actions?

When you start digging into their private relationships, you aren't just dealing with the candidate anymore, but also with members of his family, who are not running for public office.

So a person who in their private life is a lier, a cheater, a stealer and only God knows what else in their dealings with people they know it is to be assumed that they will be ever faithful to the public (the people they don't know).
