Awwww........thanks, ((((((((Sis)))))))). I sure missed everyone here.
Amen! We got a pretty good idea of the difficulties of life in colonial Williamsburg while we were there. It took a strength and fortitude that we can't imagine in order to survive the hardships presented to the settlers each and every day. They were a tough and determind lot!
I loved to listen to my mother describe being 17 when World War I ended, and everyone in Charleston
streaming out to The Battery to celebrate together.
Five years later, after college and teaching school for a year, she and my father eloped to Charleston, and were
married in the church my grandfather had had, with
her best friend from her teen years her maid of honor.
I lived there in 1968-1969, and through the years
went there often when visiting my sisters.
Dixie and visualops, I have to tell you, my husband and I spent a couple days in your beautiful Charleston last week. After you two profiled South Carolina for our Finest thread, I decided I had to put Charleston on our vacation itinerary. I am so glad I did! I got to see your two famous rivers ; the Ashley and Cooper, historic Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie, Patriot's Point, and the lovely old houses of Charleston. We also toured Magnolia Plantation....just beautiful! I wish we had more time there, two days was not enough.
Charleston was one of the highlights of our trip and, if it hadn't been for the presentation you two did on SC, I don't think we would have thought to include it in our travels. I thank you both again for the great job you did showing us around your state. I hope to someday go back and explore more of South Carolina.
I should have pinged you to my post #44 to Dixie Sass and visualops.
We sure packed a lot into the two days we had in Charleston, but the sore feet and sunburned shoulders were worth every minute we spent there. I hope to go back. There are many of the beautiful old Charleston houses that we could have toured but didn't have time on this trip.
Have a great weekend.
So glad to see you. Happy 4th to you as well.
I will be back to reply to all my pings later this afternoon. Have a great day everyone!
Wow, that's great! I'm very glad we inspired you to go! Charleston is lovely, I miss it :(
I hope you get the chance to go back soon!
One of the most memorable days I had was when my sister and her daughters and I took a Spring Plantation Tour one year.
It began at Boone Hall Plantation, where George Washington visited.
There is a video presentation of Boone Hall (where several movies were filmed)
HERE, complete with singing birds..:))
Two more followed, with an elaborate luncheon served on tables on the lawn at one - more, and then ended at Medway Plantation west of Charleston, where my forebear, Thomas Smith, married the widow of the builder/owner. He was buried there.
They, however, lived in Charleston on the river, in his large home there.
He was a Landgrave, given multiple ones (43,000 acres each) by King George - a successful shipping merchant - the Charles Town surgeon, and was active in politics, becoming a Governor of Carolina, later divided into two states.
This thread is beautiful, Mama Bear!
Hi, Mayor! I always read these daily devotionals; thank you for posting them!
YOU WERE HERE AN DIDN'T LET ME KNOW!!!!!!
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH, sniff, sniff, pout - MAMA BEAR!!!!!!!!
Thank you, my Lady, for the beautiful rainbow picture, and the web site that has our founding documents on it! I bookmarked it on my computer. :^)
You, you, you didn't let us know you were here, sniff - WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sniff, thank you for the compliment. I dearly love my low country and to think I almost had a chance to meet you, boo-hooooooooo, Wahhhhhhhhhh, sniff.
You were never more than 6 to 17 miles from me at any one time!
There was a thunderstorm in Charleston, SC on 2 July 1843. Thunder was heard. Rain fell. An alligator fell. On Anson Street. Really!
Sistah, guess what I've been doing? Sitting here at son's computer reading and holding my grandaughter. Both the parents are about to the limit in need of rest, so her mother and myself are going to take turns staying overnight so they can sleep. The lack of sleep would not have been a problem except for all that time spent in the hospital under crisis and stress. Son is especially stressed out from carrying most of the load without sleep. Emma's Mom just took her for awhile. I think the other Grandma is staying tonight. If not all night, I will come and spend the remainder of the night. Isn't this fun? I think I'm going home now until they need me.
Oh Nan, the baby's here, when was she born? What's her name? How much did she weigh? Do you have any pictures? I bet she's beautiful.
Thank you for sharing the joy!

((( very gentle hugs for Missy Emma )))
