Jack Ryan will not be the next Senator from Illinois ... and the Democrats seem confident that no other Republican will, either.
At least, John Kerry seems confident.
Because even thought the DNC has not picked a keynote speaker for the convention in Boston, Kerry recently let slip that he couldn't wait to hear the voice of Barack Obama - formerly Jack Ryan's Democratic rival for the Illinois U.S. Senate seat - "First at our convention, where he's going to have an opportunity to speak in a few weeks, and then on the floor of the United States Senate," said the junior Senator from Massachusetts.
The Democrats have said that, of course, Bill Clinton will get their party started on Monday night, July 26th, and that Sen. Ted Kennedy and Kerry's wife Teh-ray-zah will also speak, but have been mum on any other speechifying.
The New York Times reports that Kerry is the first to offer Obama as another of the speakers, leading observers to speculate just what his role might be, especially since he has not, as yet, been elected to anything.
The Times notes "Mr. Obama has become an instant poster child for a party always eager to cultivate its black and Hispanic constituencies, particularly as Mr. Kerry faces criticism for surrounding himself mainly with white men."
The Times concludes that DNC organizers will definitely "try to showcase a rainbow of talent" at the convention.

I guess his role is the same as that of all other minorities in the Democrat party - "token".
Obama may be a liberal, but he's got charisma, personality and is a dem rising star, in other words, he'd be an enemy of the clinton's, and the opposite of Kerry.
