U.S. Says Attacks Zarqawi Safehouse in Falluja

FALLUJA, Iraq (Reuters) - The U.S. military said on Thursday they had attacked a safehouse belonging to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the Jordanian militant Washington says is allied to Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) and al Qaeda.

It said the attack took place in a suburb of the restive city of Falluja, but gave no further details, although witnesses said four people were killed when a house in the city was hit by a missile fired from a U.S. warplane.

"On June the 30th, multinational forces conducted another strike on a known Zarqawi network safehouse in southwest Falluja based on multi-confirmations of Iraqi and multinational intelligence," Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt, deputy director of operations for the U.S. military in Iraq (news - web sites), said in a statement.

Witnesses said four bodies had been pulled from the house in a southwest suburb of the city and that residents were going through the rubble to see if there were any survivors.

"The house was completely destroyed. It is basically rubble," said one resident in Falluja, where fierce fighting occurred between U.S. Marines and guerrillas in April.

"The strike left a huge hole where the building was," the resident said, declining to be named.

The U.S. statement said "whenever and wherever we find elements of the Zarqawi network we will attack them."

Witnesses on the eastern edge of the city said clashes involving small arms and mortar fire had broken out between U.S. forces and guerrillas, but there were no reports of casualties.

They said the fighting was still going on.

The U.S. statement did not mention the clashes.

Both the new Iraqi government and the Bush administration will regret the day that Bush withdrew the Marines from the old city in Falluja in early May.

I disagree.....we don't need 200 dead Marines storming the city.....when we can pick them off from the air.

Put in the original title first, then [your title] in brackets. It will be less likely to be changed.

That would have been acceptable...

only four killed? ...one would think such a strike would warrant more firepower than that to take our Zarqawi's terrorists

Probably not. Folks with much more knowledge than you or me are running this show.
