The defense will make him out to be a nut and the jury has already heard that the detective didn't put much stock in it because of the timing and lack of corroboration.

Every bit of rumor and gossip broadcast, written and on the internet will be used as a way he could have made it up...Best to just let it sit there?

That's probably what the jury will be thinking as well. It plants a seed in the minds of people that this conversation might have occurred, which might be all the prosecution wanted to do anyway but without this person saying it himself who really knows?
