In Nicholson Baker's new novella, "Checkpoint," a man sits in a Washington hotel room with a friend and talks about assassinating President Bush.
It's a work of the imagination and no attempts on the president's life are actually made, but the novel is likely to be incendiary, as with Michael Moore's documentary, "Fahrenheit 9/11."
Flush with the headline-generating success of "My Life," by Bill Clinton, Alfred A. Knopf is planning to publish Baker's work Aug. 24, on the eve of the Republican National Convention. "Checkpoint" is 115 pages long and will sell for $18.
Though it is against the law to threaten the president in real life, a work of fiction is usually protected by the First Amendment.

My research: Nicholson Baker is a contributor to Howard Dean:

And they keep getting nuttier. The more extreme they get, the better for us. These people are totaly berzerk.
Drudge has a link on his page to a story with more info, but unfortunately it's a source which won't allow us to repost here.
This must be handled in one of two ways. Either This guy is busted and his books are banned, or we on the right begin engaging in our own literary target practice.
Garbage book for garbage heads.
$18 for a 115 page book? Seems pretty steep to me.
This is good. Let the far left get fanatical. They are only costing themselves. You figure that the country, Republican and Democrat is mostly even probably about 34% of the country apiece to make up 68% of the country. That other 32% is the independents, which decide elections. Guess what? That 32% sees the desperation of the left and the democrats right now and is just shaking their head (and probably voting for Bush in November). This type of garbage doesn't help Kerry, but I hope that Kerry picks Dean as his running mate, because they honestly have no shot at winning with that ticket.
The left has completely come unhinged. I feel like I'm in the twilight zone.
.
Up to a point, then the guns come out and they start assassinating elected officials.
In a sense, it is good: Secret Service has to be taking care of all (or as many as possible) attack scenarios. It is difficult to be exhaustive and foresee everything, and so if this jerk came up with something novel and plausible, it would be included in counter-preparations.
But somehow I have an hunch that his oeuvre is neither particularly novel nor plausible, and therefore is a complete waste of otherwise good trees.
You have to admire the love, compassion, and tolerance of the left.
about 15 cents a page ?
these guys are going over the cliff in the same way the Republicans did when FDR came into office in '32. All we have to do is make sure we don't get in the way.
Well, he may be a socialist pig, but he has a lifestyle to fund.
"The left has completely come unhinged. I feel like I'm in the twilight zone."
Most of the Lunatic Left has been unhinged for decades. Only now are people getting really see and hear what they are alike.
Their buddies the Lunatic Mediots used to spike stories like this one. The infamous funeral event that cost them an election and other insane actions and quotes.
America is getting to see the vile dark side of the lunatic left on a regular basis. Hopefully that will drive the moderate voters away on a regular basis.
