A relative of mine who used to be a judge in a UK court told me that they gave witnesses four choices: A motorist one day declined any of the first three choices and opted to "affirm", stating that he was an atheist. In questioning, however, he said "I swear to God I wasn't going over 60."

Jesus said, "But I say to you, do not swear at all,....But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one. swear no oaths",

and James said, "But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath.</b? But let your “Yes” be “Yes,” and your “No,” “No,” lest you fall into judgment."

This is why I alway 'affirm".
