DETROIT (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp. (news - web sites) was the highest-ranking automaker in an annual vehicle quality survey released on Tuesday, with its Lexus luxury brand winning top honors for the 10th consecutive year.

The closely watched J.D. Power and Associates survey of long-term vehicle dependability is based on responses from 48,000 owners of three-year-old vehicles in the United States when questioned about scores of specific problems ranging from wind or brake noise to uneven tire wear and stalling engines.

The survey is key to the auto industry because 52 percent of new car buyers say long-term quality is one of the most important factors in their choice of brands, according to J.D. Power. It is also important to automakers because of warranty costs....

GM is a some of its lines are getting close to the Japanese. Euro cars are not highly regarded for reliability.

But Chrysler and its Dodge, Jeep and now-defunct Plymouth brands all out-ranked Mercedes, which had 327 problems per 100 vehicles, up from 318 problems in last year's survey.

I rent a lot of cars, and I'm always so disappointed in the new American nameplate models. I had a Grand Am with a scant 1200 miles on it last time out, and it shook and rattled like a John Deere going down the road. Same with the Impala the time before. What a POS. I drive a pickup truck though personally, not a car, and have been more than happy with my American big iron.

Why is it the truck drivers seem happy with their American models while the passenger cars do not do as well?

A Toyota general manager once chewed out my wife and I for test driving a car without buying it. We told them we were comparing models and were not going to buy that day. He dressed us down for fifteen minutes saying how much we had hurt his salesman's feelings and the like. What did we do next? We got the Ford.

Now when ever we pass by a Toyota dealership we both cry "Don't Tease The Salesmen." We'll never buy a Toyota because of that.

To each his own.

I sold Hondas and Mazdas for years and they had less than half the problems of American made cars that I sold (Dodge and GM.)

I would hate that experience. I had a pretty good experience in a Toyota and Honda dealer. Maybe you should of called the national office and complained.

I think it'a b/c American truck engineers always get a blank slate to build the best truck they can think of, whereas their task with all these mini-cars (I consider the Impala to be a sub-compact!) they are trying to compete with Japanese concepts of what a car should be. JMHO.

That's what JD Powers says :-). Well ast least Mercedes. The Beamers are almost as good as GMC.

Of course Land Rover really blows.

Maybe the big 3 put better people into its truck/SUV division since truck/SUV sales are what is keeping them afloat.

Has a British car ever been reliable? I have heard horror stories about Jaguars.

from a reliability viewpoint, MB and BMW are not great. German cars can be finicky, repairs are expensive, their electronics are not as reliable as the Japanese (or the US). However, their chassis and body construction is untouchable.

I think it's because American truck owners are less willing to put up with crap engineering than American car owners.
