In a way, your post follows along quite well with France Blocks U.S. on Elite Force for Afghanistan. It appears that neither the French nor the Iranians want to stabilize the Middle East.

If you want some fun reading, cuddle up with a book on Syrian history. Before the current crop of dictators took charge, it was a French protectorate.
