OK. That explanation makes some sense to me. I am not an astronomer or scientist by any stretch of the imagination. It makes more sense when I realize that the energy being emitted does not come from the black hole
per se, but from around it.

Everything we see is indeed from around the black hole.
But there actually is a tiny amount coming FROM the Black Hole, too little to perceive and swamped by all the radiation from around the Black Hole.
It's called "Hawking Radiation" and it's why Stephen Hawking became a big deal. He figured out it had to exist, computationally, based on quantum mechanics.
