I've never been divorced, so I don't know: Is it a common occurrence to have one's divorce records sealed? What would be the motivation behind that?

I believe most states seal divorce records. But there's hope hinging on the fact that the court unsealed Jack Ryan's embarrassing records.

Of course, there is an outside chance that JFK took his wife to sex clubs and engaged in filthy acts and group sex dressed in black leather while audiences watched.

Court records are typically public, i.e., you can walk into the appropriate courthouse and ask for them and make copies. Any court records can be sealed if there's a reason that convinces the judge. I think probably most public figures wouldn't have a problem getting divorce records sealed just because they're public figures (too many people would be likely to want to see them to dig up dirt), and it wouldn't surprise me if they routinely requested it.
