WASHINGTON [MENL] -- The United States has been examining the prospect that Israel will attack Iranian nuclear facilities in an attempt to prevent the Islamic republic from completing an atomic bomb as early as this year.
U.S. analysts and government sources said the Bush administration has discussed the prospect of an Israeli air strike at several levels of government. They said the issue has been examined in terms of the diplomatic, military and security implications for the United States, particularly its military presence in Iraq and the Persian Gulf region.
The issue of Iran's nuclear weapons program was discussed by President George Bush and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon during the latter's visit to the White House on April 14. The sources said the two men were alone during the brief discussion in an effort by the president to gauge a likely Israeli response to the completion of an Iranian nuclear bomb.
"It would be intolerable for the Middle East if they [Iran] get a nuclear weapon," Bush said after meeting Sharon.

Awww... you just answered my last question. Unfortunately, if I remember correctly, the Dems in the Senate were able to kill the program. Maybe the Pentagon can start buying some of those $1000 hammers again :-).
yup. and that mountain in Libya that their program was conducted within - until they surrendered it.
no no, sorry, can't use Israeli bullets either. Don't wanna disenfranchise those terrorists or make them angry.
Ted Kennedy's amendment to forbid small low yield nukes from being developed was defeated. The vote was 55-42.
The amendment read: "Kennedy Amdt. No. 3263; To prohibit the use of funds for the support of new nuclear weapons development under the Stockpile Services Advanced Concepts Initiative or for the Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator (RNEP)."
The amendment was for the defense appropriations bill; its defeat, I presume, means that development of these nukes can go ahead.
Again.
Ayatolla ya so.
Well, they can always use a low yield nuke with a bunker buster... and blame the radiation plum as proof that the Iranians had nuclear materials inside.
Gotta go. "PLATOON" is on TV (even if it is Martin Sheen)

Pray tell, How did John F'n Kerry vote on Kennedy Amdt. No. 3263?????
This may shock you, but he wasn't present for said vote. He missed it entirely! Hard to believe really.
Yes they were and we have them. You can bet your case money Israel does too.
China... Russia... I still see both as long-term threats to our nation. I believe the next war will not be a cold one, unfortunately.
Right now they're just content to sabotage us through their Arab underlings. BTW, did you know that the Islamic Revolution in Iran as well as Bin Laden's Al Quaeda (I know this one seems like an odd claim) were schooled in Marxist/Leninist ideology at the hands of Soviet agents (I'll have to find that info again and check it for credibility, although politics does make for strange bedfellows).
I wonder how much complicity there was with 9/11; even if they weren't in on pulling the trigger, they knew the gunman was coming.
Not to take away from President Reagan, but personally I don't believe the Soviet Union ever truly "fell" but is merely playing the role for a much more effective strike in their end-game. What they effectively did by becoming a "partner for peace" is cause us to lower our guard, which is exactly what happened: we went to sleep in the 1990's and then came 9/11.
I just hope we don't forget the words of President Reagan in his farewell address to the nation regarding the Soviets, that we shouldn't "be afraid to see what we see."
israel well may, since they can conduct their program in total secrecy.
Nuke it and claim you made a conventional attack and the Iranian nukes caused secondary explosions.
So9
That's basically impossible to actually happen.
Riiiight.
That's why bin Laden founded Al Quaida to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan. It was all a cover for his true commie motives.
