EVERYBODY. It is called REALPOLITICS. There is such thing as national interest (however perceived), and people generally do whatever they think they might get away with. And since it has been going on for as long as known history, you are right: it's about damn time for you to understand it.
And .. it turns out those who have yelled the loudest about America being so materialistic .. are themselves even moreso, lusting after money and power.
