It was known as Sepoy rebellion . A rumor got started that the paper cartridges for the muzzle loading rifles of the day had been greased with rendered pork fat instead of mutton & the muslim troops in India held a little riot that cost thousands of lives before non-muslim troops ie British regulars,Sihk's,Ghurka's managed to get things back under control.
Also, a consider number of Hindu sepoy troops mutinied with the Muslim troops - the rumor claimed that both pig and cow grease was being used in the cartridges.
