Patton understood that war was war, no matter when in history it took place. He understood that you must steamroll your enemy, not negotiate and play nice.

I agree with that. In the long run in war, it is far more merciful to execute it to win overwhelmingly and then to overwhelmingly enforce the new order that follows in the defeated country.
