BRUSSELS (Reuters) – NATO nations' ambassadors struck a tentative deal on an agreement late Friday to help the interim Iraqi government train its security forces after hours of wrangling over the wording, diplomats said.

"We've agreed it, we've agreed on it tentatively," one diplomat said.

He said members of the 26-nation alliance would have until 6 a.m. EDT Saturday to raise objections, after which time the wording of a statement to be released at a NATO summit in Istanbul Monday and Tuesday would be deemed to have been adopted.

Progress is getting awfully hard for our enemies to deny.

Even National Palestinian Radio had several positive stories on Iraq the other day. I was amazed.

I even read an editorial in a very liberal Irish paper that was noting the progress that's been made.

They also, wrongly, predicted that Bush would have a tough time getting NATO to go along with his plans.

Why the heck should Israel care? Wouldn't they like a pro-western arab democracy?

"This is NOT good for Israel!"

How so? I thought stability in the neighborhood was good for Israel.

And the entire middle east as well as the USA.

Will not NATO train the Iraqi soldiers to fight the terrorist there and keep the peace?

Israel is our top Mideast priority. This war is not about creating an Iraq that is a geo-political rival to Israel. It is about creating an Iraq that is disarmed and pro-Western.

Iraq must have adequate forces to protect itself from neighbors who don't appreciate a pro-western democracy in their midst. A strong and stable Iraq is in Israel's interest.

It is refreshing to see NATO chip in a few bucks, effort, and people, in their own self-interest, after all that the UK and we have given in blood, toil, sweat, and tears, not to mention billion$, for them.
