DUBLIN, Ireland - President Bush (news - web sites) defended his decision to invade Iraq (news - web sites) and insisted most of Europe backed the move during a tense interview Thursday on Irish television.

On several occasions during the 15-minute interview, Bush asked RTE correspondent Carol Coleman not to interrupt him.

When Coleman said most Irish people thought the world was more dangerous today than before the Iraq invasion, Bush disagreed and responded, "What was it like Sept. 11th, 2001?"

"I wouldn't have made the decisions I did if I didn't believe the world would be better. Why would I put people in harm's way if I didn't believe the world would be better?" said Bush, who arrives in Ireland Friday night for a summit the next day with European Union (news - web sites) leaders.

Bush was asked whether he was satisfied with the level of political, economic and military support coming from European nations in Iraq.

"First of all, most of Europe supported the decision in Iraq. Really what you're talking about is France, isn't it? And they didn't agree with my decision. They did vote for the U.N. Security (news - web sites) Council resolution. ... We just had a difference of opinion about whether, when you say something, you mean it."

Left-wing activists plan mass protests against Bush. About 6,000 security forces have deployed around the summit site of Dromoland Castle.

I'm ashamed to be Irish----no smoking in pubs (a nanny state),high out of wedlock birthrate, and now rudeness to our President.

They'll never see me again and I used to love visiting the country. Before the EU Ireland was a joy,not wealthy, but a joy.

Not only that, all these leftists live in a fantasy world where George Bush is a conquering Nazi and the World was a better place with Iraq controlled by Sadaam Hussein. He isn't, it wasn't. These bums are so disconnected they really want to see the Iraqis fall under tyranny again, just to satisfy their left wing fantasy view of the World.

I'm Irish too, going to visit in a week. There are still some people there who understand why the United States has done what it has in the past 3 years. The media their is fairly restricted in terms of who can broadcast especially and all of the newspapers (except one or 2) are reliably unreliable - they're leftest and Anti-American. Plus Ireland is very expensive now. I don't blame you for not going, sometimes I don't feel great about going there either, but every country has problems and idiots - our own included.

Well that America fault… because most of Europe’s (and for that matter, the worlds) best gene pool moved here because of the Euro/worlds elite's bull shit

Unfortunately it seems as if Ireland has gone off the rails in the past few decades. They have traded in their traditional brand of faithful Catholicism for a mess of modernist pottage.

Ireland has been a tourist mecca for a number of years.

Very good. This tactic might force Kerry to us the "France" word finally.

The Irish low lifers are pro Islamofascist and hate GW as much as any Islamo Arabs do.

Another country of whiners not to ever visit.

Many of the Irish were pro Nazi in WWII. These a$$holes are probably their spawn. The good ones came to America and left the shallow end of their DNA pool in Ireland.
