Home Depot donates $1M to military

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Retailer Home Depot Inc. is donating $1 million in tools and materials to support the U.S. military in Iraq.

The company said it is sending nine truck trailers to the military, filled with 100,000 tools and materials, including shovels, table saws, concrete mixers, safety scaffolding, power generators, light bulbs and jackhammers. The donated goods left San Diego on Thursday.

Interesting - The Lowes near my house gives a 10% discount to anyone holding a military ID (Thanks to my wife ODC-GIRL I get 10% off)

Normally I avoid Home Depot because of their non-service and self-checkout system.

However, this changes my mind.

I know that feeling.

They know what they are doing when they send 10% off coupons with the Postal Service address change packets. It is by shear force of will not to grab a couple of those, I'd like a new fridge.

"This is a great reminder for me to choose Home Depot over the other store near my house."

Same goes for me. I also hire sub-contractors in my business, I'll make it worth their while to get the supplies that pertain to my jobs at HD.

P.S. I still have a resistance at the business model of trying to sell lumber and hardware the same way groceries are sold. IMHO.

I am remodelling my hose and have been for the past 6 months. This makes me proud to have chosen Home Depot for all of my home improvement needs.

I recently hired someone to do some work. He didn't take credit cards and I didn't have enough cash to pay him this month. The solution was for me to go to Home Depot and buy a gift card for several hundred dollars. I used the gift card along with cash as my payment. We were both happy with the deal.

P.S. I still have a resistance at the business model of trying to sell lumber and hardware the same way groceries are sold. IMHO.

I know what you mean.

Well, I don't do much fixing or building beyond puters, but next time I need some pipes for my rats I know where I'll be buying.

I buy most of my tools and supplies there. After this, they will get all my business. I am buying their stock too.

How do small businesses who do give discounts to military personnel let them know? We've been trying to do so with our business, with no response.

Is there a listing posted somewhere for military personnel (and their families) to find those small business discounts?

Sears is even better. Since the start of the war they have made up the difference in pay for employees who were called up if they had been making more at Sears.

I really don't know. My wife and I just started asking at stores. Another store that offers (I think it's a 15% discount) is NY and Company - great womens clothing store - my wife went on the Atkins diet and lost 35 lbs - so she needed a new wardrobe - and we bought most of it there.

You could just post a sign outside or on the window - I don't know of a specific website though.

That's a clever solution, I salute you. I'll keep the idea in my tool pouch. Thanks.

I would like to see a website for companies who support our President and our troops in Iraq/Afghanistan and those who support Kerry (so I can avoid all those!)...anyone have a site?
