Cabbi and a Passenger Slug it out over Troop Dispatch to Iraq

A Cabbi in his 50's and a passenger in his 30's had a heated argument over additional troop dispatch to Iraq, and ended up punching each other. Both were arrested.

On 25th (of June, 2004), two were arrested for battery at the police dept of Western District in Kwangju(, S. Cholla Province.) Around 4:30am on 23rd, they heard the news of 'Kim Sun-il's beheading' from the radio in a cab. Argument ensued over the troop dispatch. Both lost their temper and a fist fight broke out.

According to police interrogation, the passenger argued, "S. Korean has developed this far thanks to American help. Considering S. Korea-U.S. alliance, we should send troops." The Cabbi, on the other hand, retorted, "War on Iraq is an aggression for American interest. We have neither reason nor rational for sending troops." such an opposing argument resulted in the violence.

Interesting news. Usually younger folks tend to be anti-American while the older ones are pro-American. In this case, it is the opposite. Kwangju is the ruling party stronghold. This incident is a reflection of a larger conflict inside the ruling camp. The constituency for President Roh Moo-hyun is fractured into pro-dispatch and anti-dispatch crowds, bitterly fighting each other. His support base is breaking down. This is not a bad thing for conservatives because it is a fight between opportunistic lefties(Roh Moo-hyun: pro-dispatch) and hard-core lefties(anti-dispatch.)

Both camps are frantically against the proliferation of beheading video of the slain S. Korean in Internet. Government hurriedly formed a taskforce to block access to web sites featuring the video. They vowed to punish those who feature videos or spreading them over Internet. On the face of it, it sounds like a commendable attempt to curb gruesome violence in Internet. However, There could be less charitable explanation for their motive.

Two years ago, these lefties(both pro- and anti- dispatch) milked to the hilt the gruesome photos of two schoolgirls crushed to death by American bridge Vehicle in a traffic accident, in order to whip up anti-American feeling among population, which was instrumental in electing Roh Moo-hyun and his leftwing administration. They displayed photos on the streets, at the rallies, put them on their web sites. Now they suddenly regained their conscience and preach decency and morality by arguing for total ban of the beheading video. It would not be hard to conclude that they fear a massive backlash against them if the raw footage makes its round on Internet. They benefited handsomely for such a publicity. So they know full well that how devastating the fallout from beheading video could get.

Political debate occurs, but it's no reason to get arrested.

Kwangju has a bit of a history. It was the location of a Communist insurgency before, during, and after the war if memory serves. Also some large number of students were killed there in a particularly violent student demonstration in 1980.

I guess they haven't had it in a while. I was in Taiwan in '91 and Korea in '94 and didn't see these things.

Wow, anti-US cab driver, not a surprise. Though I never had one in Korea, mostly they were friendly. If they didn't like me, they made it obvious by hitting the gas and taking off after seeing who I was, so I didn't have to deal with them. And I did end up in the back of a cab at 4:30 in the morning, too, so no curfews.

Did get one in Taiwan though, during GW1.

I have always liked just about every Korean I have met or done bidness with. Although it can be a rather closed society. Oh, just like everyone else they do have their good & bad points.

No insult intended, but I have always thought of them as the 'Red Necks' of Asia. A broad stereotype, I admit. But drinking, fighting, eating and getting loud and red-faced are shared by both groups.

I also believe that, with an Army of Korean Women, I could conquer the world. But that is a fantasy not likely to see fruition.

I am, and shall always be, an unrepentant Scottish/HillBilly.

To clarify on the curfew thing: there is on civilian curfew, however, US Forces Korea requires all personnel to be on base by midnight Sunday thru Thursday and by 1am Fri and Sat nights.
