You're correct. "VIP" as a product was actually AFTER the fact of coming up w/a great MARKETING SCHEME. The scheme being to tell every1 "it's coming, it's big...." etc and get people excited about buying something ahead of time, even though they had no indication at all what it was. In the time "it's coming", they had to come up w/what product to actually make!
At least, that's *generally* how it played out. I don't recall the details at the start of the movie.
Makes you wonder how much of that "creative" marketing goes on doesn't it? I love that movie...what a blast!
