MODESTO False alarm near ex-Peterson home

MODESTO False alarm near ex-Peterson home

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When a group of children reported hearing screams and seeing a woman's body in a creek not far from the former home of Scott and Laci Peterson, police in Modesto geared up for the worst Tuesday night.

A short time later, authorities, using a helicopter and searchers on the ground, found what had prompted the scare -- a large beaver.

The false alarm came in around 8:30 p.m. with disturbing details. The children, at least one of whom was 11 years old, said a dark-haired woman's body, clothed in a ripped white shirt, was floating in Modesto's Dry Creek........

REDWOOD CITY - A string of prosecution witnesses testified Monday that Laci Peterson frequently complained of fatigue and had pledged to give up exercise walks in the weeks before her disappearance. Scott Peterson claims his wife planned to walk the couple's dog the morning he left for a solo fishing trip and returned to an empty home.........

Juror dismissed from panel

Juror dismissed from panel

By Jason Dearen

Snip it:

"Breaks in the case

The major break for detectives came in late December, when Amber Frey called the Modesto Police Department's tip line. "I was standing behind the clerk's desk; she was typing in a claim from someone claiming to be his girlfriend," Brocchini said.

Brocchini and another detective drove to Frey's house to check her story. Moments later they were at a Radio Shack, purchasing a recording device for her cell phone.

"I told her not to tell (Peterson) you are working with the police. Just let him keep talking to you ..." Brocchini said. Distaso asked how long it took for Frey to record a call.

"She recorded a conversation while we were there," he said.

The other break came while studying a photograph of Scott Peterson's boat two months after it was taken. For the firs time, Brocchini noticed a pair of pliers with a hair attached resting on the boat's bottom. The hair discovery "was kind of an exciting moment for us," said Brocchini. That hair has not been identified as Laci's, but has been excluded by DNA testing from belonging to Peterson.

At one point in the video, Brocchini tried to confuse Peterson but had the tactic backfire. Peterson said he made two calls to Laci from the marina that day, one at 2:17 p.m. and another on his way home around 4:30 p.m. "I have a couple of concerns. One is from the cell phone call at 12:17, you said 2:17 but the time stamp (on Peterson's cell phone) says 12:17," Brocchini says in an accusatory tone.

Peterson grabs the cell phone and checks the time stamp. After checking he tells Brocchini he mixed up the times. "You said it," Peterson said. With a slight pause to look at his notes, Brocchini admits, "Yeah, you're right."".....

Juror No. 5 removed, motion for mistrial denied

Justin Falconer, previously known to the world as Juror No. 5 in the Scott Peterson murder trial, speaks with the media after he was kicked off the jury Wednesday.

Snip it:

"Falconer said he would not vote to convict Peterson of murdering his wife, Laci, an unborn son, Conner, from the testimony so far presented. Speaking to a media throng outside the courthouse, he declined to comment on whether other jurors felt similarly. "

From Geragos' opening statement:

This is also a guy, understand, kind of private prior to this happening, who had just -- was making good money working for Trade Corp. I think the last tax return he filed the previous year, sixty-six thousand dollars, as a representative for this European company that was trying to break into the market.

He and Laci were excited about having the kid. They had just purchased this country club membership. And that was this December. This idea that somehow there is a timeline, he's going to chuck his whole life I think is belied by the evidence of the fact that they spent quite a bit of money to buy this country club membership. It was in excess of $20,000 to buy the country club membership. Was excited about that.

He purchased this boat -- which, by the buy, they say he didn't tell anybody about. There is a friend who knew about the boat. One of the reasons they didn't tell Ron is they specifically were going to tell Ron on Christmas morning, because Ron was an avid fisherman. And this idea that Laci didn't know about the boat, they know better than that. They know that there is a witness, and that witness will tell you that Laci was at the warehouse on December 20th.

She was there at the warehouse on December 20th, had seen the boat, was in the boat, and then went from that location because she couldn't -- Mr. Distaso accurately, on one point yesterday, indicated you couldn't get to the bathroom in the back of the warehouse, because it's stacked up with the fertilizer. She was worried about getting anywhere near that liquid fertilizer, so she went next door to use the bathroom in one of the other warehouses. And a woman there saw her and talked to her.

And they know that. They know that she was there, that she saw the boat. She didn't tell her mom about the boat. She didn't tell her stepfather about the boat. And she had talked to her mom after she had been to that warehouse, never mentioned a word about it.

$66,000??????? The way they lived, that is NOT a lot, is it?

According to this map:
http://www.aphis.usda.gov/ws/nwrc/is/living/beavers.pdf
it looks like Modesto>South in CA and most of AZ are the only places Beavers are NOT found. Didn't know they were that widespread.

No, that's NOT a lot of money, considering how they lived. $20,000 country club membership, on an annual income of $66,000? And considering the cost of living in California is high, it's even less money. Were they living beyond their means?

It sure looks like it, doesn't it? We make a lot more than that and we sure couldn't afford to hand over $20,000 for a club membership even if we wanted one.

Isn't that opening statement of his fascinating though? He's testifying!

We make considerably more than that, as well, and we couldn't fork over $20,000 for a club membership. I wonder if they were in debt up to and beyond their eyeballs. My brother in law said something relating to material possessions and income to me a long time ago and I still remember it. I'd commented about the big houses and expensive cars that people I knew owned, and I was wondering how in the world they afford them. "Big payments, deep in debt". I guess that explains it.

It's kind of sad, to me. I see those kids driving around in those big foreign cars and I see the ads for payements of $450 a month and I wonder where they get the money and what they're giving up.

This guy couldn't have been bringing home more than $3,000 a month, if that!

Great New Liz. The Prosecution would NEVER leave a gap like that. Geragos KNEW about the entire scenario but he decided to make it look like the lead Detective was DELIBERATELY leaving out EXCULPATORY evidence when IN FACT Geragos knew he WASN't!! I hope the Prosecution makes HAY with this on Monday!! What a creep Geragos is. And what is WRONG with these talking heads?? Do they want a wife and baby killer on the street??? Their motives are very suspect to me. IMO it's HEADLINES they are after. On monday the headline will be reversed!! Just watch

The discussion was going fine in the CTV usual report until they got to this, "The courtroom gasped and now Bronccini's credibility is COMPLETELY destroyed" according to Vinnie, the CTV reporter and hostess for CTV.."Prosecutors must distance themselves from police now."(Right/sarcasm...sigh)

The Prosecutors left a big opening and the jury has all weekend to ponder the omission...I don't think it is serious, just puzzling..How I feel is not important..It's how the jury feels that I worry about.

Geragos is well on the way in his "try the police and the prosecutors" defense.IMHO

Re the Petersons' finances. I've wondered about that for some time.....especially when I read that they had hocked some of Laci's jewelry at a pawn shop for $100, which would have been pocket change for the kind of expenses they must have had.

I've come to the conclusion that they are ALL drama queens.

This is exactly why it NEEDS to be on TV; so WE can see for ourselves.

That's not the way it went juzcuz. Laci MOST LIKELY NEVER saw the boat, she didn't want to go into the warehouse near the fertilizer and wanted to use the lady's bathroom. The Prosecution will straighten this out on Monday and Geragos's DECEPTION and need to grab Headlines will be OUTTED. That man PLUS most of the media are just such bottom feeders. They ALL make me want to hurl!!

Warning! This is not from testimony, no one has verified this.

Part of the CC report last night said Scott had lost 100,000 dollars the year before...I don't know if he told Amber this, don't know if it's true or if this is just another TV rumor.

More like a Roller Coaster ride which I've always avoided. Could even be compaired to one of those illegal dog fights.

Just think they havn't even gotten to the forensic eggs-perts yet. Remember what happened to the bug eggs-perts and the dog mandlers in the Westerfield case? Oh, lord I'm going to have to stock up on Tylenol and Popcorn..

You left out the maid's wages, yogi classes, etc. Since Scott went out of town after each of these pawn shop trips (right?)...rendevous w/Amber...I can "see" him telling Laci that their bank balance is zero and he just has to have expense money for his "business" trip.
