In the 1940's they had the same problem with the young and street races in San Diego.

There was a paved strip that was used also.

As I recall, it ended in a drop off, so we lost a few who
didn't stop in time.

Otay, Chula Vista and San Diego High. (in the last century)

I must admit we did that in the SF Valley as well. But NEVER on streets with traffic. There were dead end streets where subdivisions were planned and not built yet where we met in the Granada Hills Northridge areas.
