Unh, I think he was flying an F-104, you know, a jet plane. His duties consisted of taking the necessary training and staying proficient. In the event of a national emergency, he may have been called upon to serve in the capacity of a fighter-interceptor pilot, in pursuit of intercontinental bombers coming from the Soviet Union.

A threat, incidentally, which never materialized. Because, at the time, we were ready to respond to it.

Bush stopped flying F-102s in April of 1972, before he went to Alabama.
