1984 Flashback: 105 Academics, Nobel winners buy ad to back Mondale over Reagan
The New York Times, UPI | October 31, 1984

One hundred one academics who support the Presidential candidacy of Walter F. Mondale bought a quarter page advertisement in today's issue of the New York Times to say Mr. Reagan's suggestion "that his record was in the tradition of Roosevelt, Truman and Kennedy" was "a flagrant distortion of reality to serve his own political purpose."

The group, which includes five Nobel prize winners, comes from 22 colleges, universities and other institutions.

They were wrong then, they are wrong now.

Doesn't keep them from trying the same tactic with George W. Bush.

My favorite Letterman line when Mondale was trounced by Norm Coleman in Minnesota:

"Well, now Walter knows how it feels to have his ass kicked in all 50 states."

In fairness to the academics, many did not believe the Mondale better than Reagan message. Many were simply following the instructions of their local party chairman who was acting on orders directly from Moscow.

The group, which includes five Nobel prize winners, comes from 22 colleges, universities and other institutions.

Pointed heads are pointed heads no matter how many awards they win.

Can anyone find that Wall Street Journal article from the early 1980's where noted economists and Ronald Reagan were surveyed about the US economy and markets. As you might have guessed only Reagan predicted strong growth, higher stock prices and lower interest rates.
