TEHRAN, June 22 (Reuters) - Iranian satellite television showed British naval personnel in blindfolds on Tuesday and said equipment found on their boats in Iranian waters indicated that they were not "regular sailors"."Their weapons, instruments, large equipment, machineguns and sub machineguns, and the flag of their special naval unit indicate that they are not regular sailors, according to the Iranian officer. Their mission is still unclear," Iran's Arabic-language news channel al Alam reported.
The channel reported that the British naval personnel had apologised because they had lost their way.
Get real here. One of the craft was on delivery to the Iraqi River Police. These waterway patrols are a constant in the area. Over zealous Iranian Revolutionary Guard unit surrounds the Royal Navy vessels and this is how we end up in this mess. The crew are a mixture of Royal Navy and Royal Marines.

Check out Michael Ledeen in today's National Review Online. He thinks that the Brits were planting motion sensors to help protect Iraq's oil ports. Iran was planning to bomb those ports (win-win for them, higher oil prices and unrest in a once-and-future enemy country). Thus they found this activity very threatening.

just heard this mornign that Iran is releasing the hostages sometime tomorrow - I ain't holdin' ma breath on it, but if it goes down like that, so be it.
fyi, I'm a Proto-Jacksonian when it comes to dealing with these mullah mutts (or anyone else messin-round with mine...). Your way is the more reasoned, and your choice of verb is absolutely correct. Escalation must come in measured form... just as long as what we understand to be a measured response is adequately supported by Teddy Roosevelt's Big Stick in the other hand - and the opponents can plainly see both the stick, and the will to use it.
That Stick - despite all the bs our enemies spew on the international stage of public opion - is all they understand and defer to.
