President Bush awarded the nations highest civilian honor to Norman Podhoretz, the Jewish political theorist.
President Bush awarded the nations highest civilian honor to Norman Podhoretz, the Jewish political theorist.
Podhoretz helped cultivate neo-conservatism in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and he has steered its flagship publication, the American Jewish Committee-published Commentary, since then. Neo-conservatism was founded by former liberal intellectuals, many of them Jews, alienated from the American left because of its perceived appeasement of Communism.
Among the recipients are Vartan Gregorian, former head of Brown University and the New York Public Library, neoconservative thinker Norman Podhoretz, golf great Arnold Palmer, actress Doris Day and Estée Lauder, the late cosmetics queen.
Bush presented Pope John Paul II with his medal during a visit in Rome on June 4.
Former Citibank chief Walter Wriston; Gordon Hinckley, the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; and former Massachusetts Sen. Edward Brooke were also among those named.
The medals will be distributed at a White House ceremony on Wednesday
Well deserved honors to national figures who've made outstanding contributions to the life of this Nation.

Kind of like the sky's perceived blueness.
Does Nancy R. have one of those baubles - and if not why not?
I think she received one but I can't be certain. I doubt that Ron R. Jr. will be getting one anytime soon.
I believe she and President Reagan each received on back when Dad Bush was president.
Add to the list of recipients Arnall Patz, director emeritus of the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute.
J. Podhoretz supported McCain.
