Arnold did not "express support" for this, he is the one pushing it. His environmental policy was written by JRK Jr. And one of these bills was authored by a Republican.

Yes McClintock is opposed to this legislation. Rico Oller is opposing it as well.

Here is the vote total in the Assembly. I think the Rs are falling right in line with their leader.

Unfortunately, Mr. Leslie's bill will have much the same effect:

• It will take the land out of the hands of small landowners, mostly Republicans.
• It will enrich a few developers that have pull with the board (call that the corruption that it is (hence Mr. Broad's contributions),
• The developers will build vacation and retirement homes on timberland regulated out of business and pack the "servant's quarters" into low income housing in growing towns with urban boundaries (see outrageous prices... banks will love it),
• "Forest Preservation" will make the San Bernardino Fire look like a patch burn.

Sorry, it's worked that way every other time it's been done. That's the way the game has been played in Santa Cruz County (where this gambit was invented) for over thirty years.

Good question. I've tried to get Tom to take this on. I've talked with John Stoos (his chief of staff) about it. John's attitude was, 'No matter what position we take on the environment, we lose.' I did my best and struck out.

Further, with all due respect... Last night on Channel 4 in San Francisco Willie Brown was grinning like a cat eating glue and gloatingly predicting that Arnold would have no choice but be "rolled" on all the major leftist issues this week and next... The budget and drivers licenses for illegal aliens, to name the two major issues!!!

The only hope we had/have is for ardent supporters, such as yourself, to turn up the heat on him as NO Republican elected has the courage to stand up to him and stop this!!! He will say he campaigned on this conservacancy and was elected by voters and supporters who were terrified of Bustamante and "by Jove," he's gonna sign it with a flourish and enthusiasm!!!
