We're far enough into the Schwarzenegger administration to begin judging it on its own merits, and not simply in comparison to the faux leadership of Gov.-reject Gray Davis. While there are many good things about the actor-turned-governor and his forceful, personality-based style, there is one thing, so far, that comes up wanting:
The governor's excessive love of deal-making.
As we've noted before on the Register's editorial pages, the governor sometimes falls short of achieving substantive change because he wants to sign onto something in which everyone agrees. He loves the adulation and fanfare. His political instincts lean in the right direction, but the governor clearly is not policy-driven. He is people-driven.
As such, he tends to pull up short. The recall and his astounding victory provided a unique opportunity to make fundamental, long-term changes in state government that could put California on a competitive footing for years. But he is frittering some opportunities away.

Helloooo!!! The CA Legislature is overwhelmingly Democrat.
It is a miracle and a great credit to Arnold that he was able to get them to go along with his agenda by giving in on smaller, less important issues, to be able to win the big ones, such as NO NEW TAXES, repealing the car tax, repealing the driver's license for immigrants, getting a workman's comp bill through, and cutting the budget.
IN ONLY SIX MONTHS!!!!
Bring On November!!!
You've got to cut deals to get things done. Look at Ron Paul in congress. Arguably the most free-market of the 435 there, but since he's not willing to compromise, he hasn't gotten a single bill out of committee.
Well said.
You are right.
Some people prefer those who grandstand, but accomplish nothing -- it makes them feel good listening to them and continue to whine about the state of affairs, insted of making small changes in the right direction.
"It is better to light a candle, than curse the darkness."
Anorld is certainly doing his part, by fundraising for Republicans for CA Legislature.
Vote out the Dems, give Arnold a Republican Legislature, then watch what they together can accomplish.
Tossing a bargeful of 'Rats & lobbyists out of Sacramento would be a good start.
The idea that we need more taxation is a "fetish" that this state can not afford to indulge in.
Also, that this state can recklessly continue to support bloated pension plan benefits and will not deny benefits to illegals need to be addressed, imo.
But he is making fundamental, long-term changes. They are socialist and being ignored by everyone. I wish the R's who supported him would get off their arses and fight to get this stuff defeated.
We'll see what additional legislation he signs the next few months...
And go from there.
Here's some FR search results re: the proposed Sierra Nevada Conservancy
Here's a whole lot more!
We need some MAJOR action here... We need to be letter writing, calling the Governor, calling your Senator, THIS WEEK! Inform your friends, family, coworkers, neighbors. This one is slipping under the radar and time is running out. Waiting to see if one of these bills pass is dangerous... it's time to make sure they don't!ALERT:Hearing scheduled for Sierra Nevada Conservancy bills 6/29/04
CA freepers, RED ALERT RED ALERT!!!
CA freepers, RED ALERT Thread 2
A Sierra umbrella? - Conservancy proposed to protect mountain range
Protect Property Rights!
"NO" on AB 1788, No Sierra Nevada Conservancy!"NO" on AB 2600, No Sierra Nevada Conservancy!
Borrowing billions is getting things done? Springing murderers is getting things done? What a laugh. McClintock would have just burned them down on the budget with the line item veto, and ordinary vetoes. Schwarzenegger took the easy way out, and did what Davis would have done. Borrow and Spend.
Arnold's the best thing to happen to California since Reagan.
yea, well let me know if you want to pay my quarterly state income taxes will ya...LMAO
"best thing since Reagan"...yea right...
I don't know what you do for a living but one thing's for sure it doesn't entail running a business and paying CA state income taxes and fees.
I pay my own, thank you. Have they gone up since Arnold's been in office?
cult... Arnold
Very explanatory. Thank you.
They will to pay for the land grab he is pushing through right now. See the links in post 13. This was stuff he campaigned on, socialist land grabs.
