June 20, 2004 -- GIL HODGES not only was a great all-around ball player, he was a great Marine, earning the Bronze Star in World War II. In the course of serving his country he also earned a Combat Action Ribbon, but he was never given the recognition he deserved for that honor . . . until today.

Gil Hodges was one of my heroes when I was a kid.
Glad to see him getting the recognition he deserves.

When I was a kid, the Hodges lived a few blocks away - nice
house on Bedford Ave in Brooklyn. I wasn't much into baseball then, but I recall going up to their door on Halloween... must of been his wife who gave out the candy though.
