California Schools Investigate Antidrug Program With Scientology Links

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The state schools superintendent has ordered an investigation into an anti-drug program with ties to the Church of Scientology. Narconon Drug Prevention and Education has been used by schools nationwide for the past two decades; it's used in at least 20 school districts in California, including San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Though many teachers and students have praised the program, experts say some of Narconon's medical theories are irresponsible and have no basis in fact.
For example, the program teaches that drugs accumulate in body fat and can cause drug cravings and flashbacks for years; that saunas can sweat drugs out of the body; and that colored ooze is released when drugs leave the body.
The San Francisco Chronicle published articles in early June that detailed links between Narconon's instruction and the Church of Scientology's religious teachings. On Wednesday, Superintendent Jack O'Connell said an investigation could lead to an order barring Hollywood-based Narconon from providing instruction in state schools.
"We have an obligation to inform school districts of potentially inaccurate and misleading information being distributed," O'Connell said.
Narconon officials defended their medical claims. They acknowledge Scientologists support the program and that Narconon administrators and lecturers are Scientologists. They insist the program is legally and financially separate from the Church of Scientology.
Last week, San Francisco schools Superintendent Arlene Ackerman told Narconon to revise parts of its curriculum by June 24 or be banned. Narconon officials said they are working to answer the district's questions.
A spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Unified district said the program was being reviewed.
And they're just noticing that?
Antidrug programs and Scientology are a natural pair, both are experts in brainwashing and emotional manipulation. What's the problem? If you're going to accept DARE, Scientology isn't really all that different. You end up with zombies who can't think for themselves either way.
This is one case where the separation of "church" and state makes sense. Scientology is a big pile of sh-t.
These "treatments" are in the program Tom Cruise is funding for NYC rescue workers, to clear their bodies from damage from 9/11. The press has been swooning so much for Cruise's magnamious gesture, that they haven't bothered to investigate the "science" behind it. Incidentally, the sauna use recommended by this program is 4-6 hours a day!
One other thing -- isn't Scientology legally considered a religion for tax purposes? Why are public schools allowing a religious-based and religious-funded program in the classrooms? If this were an evangelical-Christian-created anti-drug program, you know it would never see the light of day.
Be interesting to find out if they allow AA?
That's a LONGGGGG sauna.
Yep, and that sauna is to be taken after you're supposed to do 30 minutes of exercise in the program.
As for the AA question, I don't know if they offer educational programs; I haven't heard of any.
The only difference between religious nuts and ordinary nuts is that religious nuts are easier to find on the weekends.
