Belgium's Dutroux found guilty in sex crimes case

A Belgian jury has found Marc Dutroux, the country's most hated man, guilty of leading a band of criminals to kidnap and rape six girls and kill four of them.

After three days of deliberations, the chief juror gave the courtroom the jury's first answers to 243 questions on the role of Dutroux and three co-defendants in a series of crimes that shocked Belgium nearly eight years ago.

Reading out the answers, the chief juror said Dutroux was also found guilty of murdering one of the girls.

The verdict is the climax to a trial that gripped Belgians for more than three months with details of a dungeon, suspected police complicity and suggested links to a Satanic cult.

"Finally we will be able to punish these assassins," Jeanine Lejeune, grandmother of one of the victims, told local television as she entered the courthouse before the verdict was read.

"This is the day that we will avenge my little girl."

Dutroux, his ex-wife Michelle Martin, and two other suspects were absent from the courtroom in this eastern Belgian town near the border with Luxembourg.

They will hear the long-awaited verdict once the chief juror has read the answers to all the questions and the judge has worked out any inconsistencies that may have arisen.

The key questions that have yet to be answered with a simple "yes" or "no" concern Dutroux's responsibility for the deaths.

The two youngest victims, both aged eight, starved to death in a dungeon built in the basement of his house near the southern city of Charleroi where he kept his victims locked up.

Dutroux admits kidnapping and raping some of the girls but denies killing them, blaming other defendants for the deaths.

If found guilty on all counts, Dutroux faces life in prison.

The co-defendants could each get more than 20 years.

Sentencing will come after the prosecutor, defence lawyers and the suspects have had a chance to react to the verdict.

The case has haunted Belgians since Dutroux's 1996 arrest.

The crimes not only made their country synonymous with paedophilia in the world's eyes but also raised questions in people's minds about the possible complicity of police and politicians.

Given the bungled investigation into the missing girls, many Belgians came to believe Dutroux worked under the protection of a child sex ring whose members included influential people.

Dutroux has played on that widely held belief, insisting that he was a reluctant accomplice to the ring.

But the 440,000 pages of evidence and more than 500 witnesses produced no new leads at the trial.

Hang him and his ugly wife, heels first, in the public square of Brussels.

This seems to be tremendously disingenuous as a news article. Isn't it all but proven that the pedohilia reached high into the political hierarchy?

If it were up to me, the judge would be issued a revolver.

The single most horrifying case of sexual predation in a very long time, IMHO. I would strongly advise people who get nightmares not to look into it.

" . . . Marc Dutroux, the country's most hated man,"

Something about that amuses me; it reminds me of the journalism of a bygone era, when journalists assumed the police were right and the criminal was wrong. lol

I hope it's a short life.

I followed this case for years.

There is filth and compliciity at the highest levels of the Belgium Establishment in the misprosecution of a ring of paedophiles.

The people of Belgium know it, too, as this provoked the biggest demonstration in their history.
