'Mexico is a terrific country' and other insights [Schwarzenegger press conference]
Sacramento Bee ^ | June 17, 2004 | Daniel Weintraub

Reporters who cover Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger have been complaining lately that the governor is not accessible enough to the media. Although he spends a lot of time in public, often in front of television cameras, the scribes in the Capitol don't think he has held enough press conferences to answer their questions.

Well, Schwarzenegger made himself available Tuesday, and his performance was Exhibit A for why the press conference format, at least with this governor, is overrated.

Known for his relentless optimism, Schwarzenegger was almost self-mockingly sunny about everything thrown his way. After a brief opening statement on the status of the state budget negotiations, he responded to 21 questions, including follow-ups, but did his best to avoid saying anything close to being news. Instead, he piled praise upon his political allies and adversaries, heaping compliment on top of compliment until his sweetness almost became a joke.

In short, the press conference was less a vehicle for reporters to learn anything new than another tool for Schwarzenegger to get his face on television again, this time displaying the friendly bipartisanship that many voters value in their government.

I think you could make a drinking game out of the number of times Schwarzenegger says 'fantastic' in a speech.

A terrific country is one where you don't have to worry about drinking the water and the citizens don't invade the neighboring country.

Mexico is NOT a terrific country.

"We don't need the carrot and stick approach here," he said. "I think that everyone wants to do their best so they can go for election and get re-elected and they can shine and they can go back to their constituencies and say, 'Look, we did it.'... I have no reason at this point to campaign against anybody, because right now everyone is working together. It's one big family."

Hilarious.

Mexico is a very corrupt country that forces its people to migrate to make a living, and only has a small amount of the population wealthy. Their entire economy is based on how much money is sent home from their migrant workers.

He must be confusing people by using language correctly.

'Terrific' = terror + facio.

Mexico causes or gives rise to terror. Sounds right to me.

It is sad, because those people are oppressed. By their own people. The upper ruling class holds the common folk down. The thing that upsets me is they come here and use our laws against us, demand what they cannot get at home to be given to them here.

You make an excellent point and while it is sad they are not our responsibility.

The Mexican people are misguided. They need to demand their rights from the Mexican government, The American people are good natured, and have allowed these people to migrate and employ here. This is not a cure-all. Mr. Fox, and Mexican congress, give your people a viable economy to have a good live. It is the Mexican governments fault for the failure of their people.

I know, it is not our responsibility, but, the Mexican government is making it our problem.

And in turn we should make it theirs by sending all their citizens back.

This topic needs to be discussed. The American people are being overwhelmed by Mexico's lack of caring for their own people and basing the entire economic base on what is sent home to support their country.

There are more billionaires per capita in Mexico than any other country. It is not the neighborhood gardeners fault, but it is also not the Americans responsibility.

This is not a racist issue. This is an issue that the Mexican government refuses to provide a livable income by providing an economy to stop this.

We need to discuss this without using racial comments against these people. What can Mexico do to help their people, and tell Mr. Fox to do it.

Put in those terms, Mexico *is* what the American left *thinks* America is. If we could get lefties to see this, the moonbats would have something useful to do, the lot of the Mexican people might be improved, and the US wouldn't be absolutely flooded with the immigrants who are trying to escape it all. Win-win-win.
