You are partially correct. In 2004, some phones will work in Europe --- GSM phones will work, but TDMA/CDMA phones will not. I'm not as sure about 2001, but I think all U.S. phones would not work in Europe then.

Tri-bands work anywhere in Europe or the US...but 98 percent of the population don't buy tri-bands because they cost too much.
