I don't think this was much different than what I did once if the article says what I think it does except I was past any age barrier.

I got a gun for Christmas. My mom bought it. I was there and went through the background check since it was for me.

Never mind. Re-read it. This sounds like entrapment.

The cops broke the law. The dealer sold it to the cop. The dealer even sounds like he said no at first if it was for the 18 year old.

Generally this activity is exempt, as it is specifically a "purchase for gift" and is mentioned in law as exempt. Other factors contributing to evidence of "purchase for gift": close blood relative; both persons legally able to posess firearms; receiving party passed background for this particular gift; no concealment of facts from firearm dealer; Christmas. Pretty much, no cop in his right mind would touch this one. Wise cop would say: Your mom got a gun for YOU? That's a good trade!
