Republicans were dismayed to hear Ron Reagan, Jr., deliver what sounded like a rebuke to President Bush during a final tribute before his father was buried on Friday.
Referring to his dad as "a deeply, unabashedly religious man," the Reagan son added, "But he never made the mistake the fatal mistake of so many politicians - wearing his faith on his sleeve to gain political advantage. . . "
"He accepted [his faith] as a responsibility, not a mandate," noted the presidential son. "And there is a profound difference."
Presidential historian Douglas Brinkley said there was no doubt the comments were a slap at Bush, but noted that Reagan Jr., "is somebody who's on the left more than on the right."
"He's never been in lockstep with his father or his father's legacy," Brinkley told WABC Radio's Steve Malzberg.
In fact, Bush supporters should probably consider themselves lucky that Ron Jr. was able to keep his Bush-bashing under wraps for as long as he did.
Commenting on the president's nomination four years ago, a less restrained Ron Jr. asked sarcastically, "What's his accomplishment? That he's no longer an obnoxious drunk?"
A for President Reagan's religion, he was indeed unabashed when it came to his Christian faith. He was the first president in over a century who openly professed his faith in "Jesus Christ." He used almost every major public opportunity to invoke God, God's name or prayer.
One of his most famous speeches, where he called the Soviet Union an 'Evil Empire', was at a conference of Evangelical ministers.
I sure am glad that Nancy was alive to see to it that Reagan got the state funeral he deserved. I get the feeling that Patti and Ron would have done everything they could to have kept it short and would have buried him the day he died.
My God..your words need to be framed!
Ron Reagan Jr. has never been politically reliable. A larger part of that may owe to being in reaction to the father's politics, much as Candace Bergen reacted to her famous father's beliefs. Considering that Ron Reagan Jr. has not been much of a major player, maybe the institutional Hollywood crowd isn't buying it.
patti and ron jr. are examples of spoiled hollywood brats who never worked a day in their lives and feel guilty as a result. We can only thank God that their father was able to raise a Country despite the fact that two (not three) of his own children turned out to be scumbags.
Ron and Patti don't know who the hell they are. They are both spoiled kids who have never grown up and will use their father's legacy to further their own ambitions, however weak they are.........
Thank you. I nearly wept when Ron Jr. squandered one, final moment to do his father proud. My blood pressure must have spiked more than 20 points following is dig at GWB and Christians, in general.
The kid dropped out of Yale to become a ballet dancer; what more needs to be said?
Or, perhaps, he wanted to convert his father's funeral into Wellstone Rally Version 2.0.
Fortunately for us, like everything else this punk does, he failed.
Or, Bill Clinton, apparently inviting 3 men of the cloth to supposedly help counsel him to mend his wicked ways.
Or, how about the Reverend Jessie Jackson and the Reverend Al Sharpton, using their religious title to meddle in politics. Talk about separation between church and state.
Or, how about just about any democrat running for public office campaigning in black churches.
So who knows exactly what the son of Ronald Reagan was trying to convey. If he was taking a jab at President Bush, I'm sure his dearly beloved father would not agree. Maybe, sometime he will feel a heavenly pull on his earlobes for doing so.
He's not nearly a quaint as he thinks. People will for get the ballet dancer/psuedo-journalist/dog show announcer soon enough.
Ron is a total flake. His smirk on his face through the entire thing made me want to vomit...the entire week. All I could remember is the 1980s and his bashing his father left and right. Don't get me started on the other one..not only was her hair a crime scene but she is just so damn fake and in it for the money/book earnings for years to come...they could be the 2 easiest people to read through in the history of mankind.
This is picky, but I've noticed certain press calling him Ron, Jr. I'm not too sure he is a Jr.
Junior is just another data point to prove that there is no lifeguard in the gene pool.
he is not really Jr.
I hope he speaks at kerry's convention and screams at the top of his lungs "WE WIIL WIN!!.. WE WILL WIN!!" about 40 times. That would clench the election for Bush.
President Reagan WOULD think W's faith is genuine...as most people in this country do. A staunch hard left Lib like Ron Jr. thinks it's a put on for political purposes.
LMFAO
A sad aftermath for the funeral of the finest president in my lifetime. President Reagan was a man of faith but he left two offspring who are not believers. I would rather be a common man whose children love the Lord than walk in Reagan' boots. History will record him as a great leader. Eternity may record him as a failure because he did not "communicate" his faith to his children. Thank God for the adopted one - Michael!
Is/has Patti ever been married? Current boy friend? I noticed she was alone.
I can't wait for the Ron defenders to come in here and defend him and his whore sister......it's gonna get bloody on this thread...
