Beirut, Lebanon, Jun. 15 (UPI) -- Iran reportedly is readying troops to move into Iraq if U.S. troops pull out, leaving a security vacuum.
The Saudi daily Al-Sharq al-Awsat, monitored in Beirut, reports Iran has massed four battalions at the border.

I think you nailed it.
Wondering now if a little dust up ('thousands dead in unprovoked B-52/ B-1/ cruise missle strike') would haul the islamic wasteland into line behind Iran, or give their now constrained dissenters a boost for open civil war?
Iran has
2 Mechanized Divisions
3 Armored Divisions
5 Infantry Divisions
1 Special Forces Divison
1 Parachute Division
1 SSM Brigade
1 Logistics Bridgade
9 rusty MIG 21's
305 motorized kites
47,396 dromaderies with armored blankets
13 seaworthy naval vessels
12 scrapped naval vessels
and a pratridge in a pear tree
Do you know in what part of Iran the nuclear reactor is located?
No but I bet the Israelis do.
It would, but I really try not looking at this with a jaded eye toward some kind of conspiracy.
At what point do we citizens trust -- explicitly -- what our government's telling us, granting 'em full latitude to do what's right based on that trust?
I say now, hence my placing the onus on the Iranian leadership, their -- apparent -- low IQ and reckless disregard for their own citizens.
Sane nations do not challenge the United States military forces.
They simply don't & there're enough precidents to convince any doubter of that.
"The CIA whips some mad mullah into a frenzy, they take a swing at us in Iraq, and we take them out. The perfect provocation. We could actually declare war. None of this U.N. bullshine."
Yup, yup & yup.
Just one thing though, I sincerely don't believe it'd take our CIA to whip up any of the Iranian mullahs.
...they're all pretty mad to start.
These guys don't want to last very long, do they?
Becki
I think you mean S. Korea...or are you saying Iran is bringing in troops from N. Korea?
If you mean Bushehr, it's northern Gulf coast; west of Isfahan>
Yes. South. bad typo. I meant the troops U.S. is pulling out of S.Korea.
Prediction: massing armies will become obsolete in the early 21st century.
The Brit carrier fleet consists of 3 ships, the Invincible, Illustrious and Ark Royal.
From what I found Illustrious is in dry dock for a major re-fit.
Invicible is always ready to be deployed in 48 hours.
Couldn't find anything about Ark Royal deployment.
Come to think of it, you're 100% correct about that.
But man-oh-man are they in for a rude reality check if they have & believed the bilge.
"They'd not be risking this if they did not believe the Bush adminstration felt constrained."
Yea but in light of the complete lunacy of messing with our forces?
I gotta wonder if maybe they've not another, totally different reason to be on that boarder other than the *assumption(s)* they're going to attack?
After all, it is their country.
"Of course, they also fail to realize that they are facing a raw guts poker player, not a nuanced, faux chess playing fop."
Yup, & contrary to the garbage they may have been told about the man by Liberal-Socialist quislings he ain't stupid.
...or indecisive.
A couple of things strike me about this.It is provocative without being an immediate threat. Is it ,as has been suggested elsewhere on this thread,a security apparatus for the border jumpers? Is it a sacrificial target for us to pluck? Is it designed to hopefully muddle the US(and other Western )elections? I'm going to risk sounding a Cassandra, but I think there are all three elements here. What proportion as yet I don't ,and not too many of us do ,know. We shall see soon enough .
Remember, the "Highway Of Death" in Kuwait? That same scene would play out in the case of an Iranian invasion.
Iran never had the MIG-21.
They do have
30 MIG-29 (Fulcrum)
24 Su-24 (Fencer.)
They also still have about 150 US made aircraft rated at about 60% serviceable.
Their Navy has
10 Kaman missile patrol boats
10 Houdong missile patrol boats
3 missile frigates
2 corvettes
5 submarines
But they (Iran) have Russia on their side- they signed a defense pact several months ago. Not good.
Thanks - BUMP!
Bad idea. We have the airspace available to exterminate the vermon.
Is anyone really going to be surprised?
Dear Jeff,
You write, "the strategic implications of having our forces and ultimately a friendly country nestled right there...sandwiched between Iran and Syria are going to become more and more apparent."
I agree. We can have troups and supplies there. Whenever there is a big problem we can project our forces quickly. If Al Qaeda stages a coup in Saudi Arabia, we can't wait a year getting ready while they mine the oil fileds.
And lots of raghead divisions!
