[history]
Beirut, Lebanon, Jun. 15 (UPI) -- Iran reportedly is readying troops to move into Iraq if U.S. troops pull out, leaving a security vacuum.
The Saudi daily Al-Sharq al-Awsat, monitored in Beirut, reports Iran has massed four battalions at the border.

Offensively, the 2 mech & 3 armored divisions are the only ones that you have to worry about. Leg infantry isn't gonna get too far too fast.
Given that the mullahs appear to be on their last legs, you have to wonder about the motivation of the average Iranian trooper.

Given that Iran & N.Korea are in bed together, the fact that N. Korea wants S. Korea, US policy is (until lately) to pacify and use words instead of bullets or bombs and that Iran & N.Korea probably get most of their intel from CNN which is anti-war and reports that most of America wants out of Iraq as well, I think that it is a planned distraction orchestrated to get more US troops OUT of S.Korea, thus opening the border to a N.Korean invasion. It helps Iran by showing the other Islamo-wackos that Iran is not afraid of the US and as payment N.Korea helps Iran in their WMD programs. It helps JKerry and the Dems by re-energizing the 'peace' movement if GWB makes any show of force.
For the dark ones it is a win-win situation. That's my .02.

I respectfully beg to differ. It is ironic given yor screen name that you should make that statement since they have apparently updated their F14s and more importantly, are producing their own version of the Phoenix missile. And who helped the Iranians get those F-14 relics flying? I'd heard that the Iranians have, maybe, 1 flyable F-14 and that the bulk of their fleet hasn't flown since the early stages of the Iran-Iraq War.
Maintenance to Flying hours on those early F14's were horrendous, too.

I wondered what we were going to do with Iran's nuclear reactor. I wouldn't expect that "we" will do anything about Iran's nuclear reactor. Israel, otoh, will likely take it out before years end, IMO.

FOUR BATTALIONS!! The Battalion is the lowest echelon at which firepower, maneuver, intelligence, and support are combined under a single commander. Battalions normally fight enemy forces they can see and engage--this defines an area of operations extending from less than 100 meters in forests, urban areas, or close terrain, out to about 5 to 6 kilometers from the battalion's direct and indirect fire weapon systems. During the offense, the battalion task force is expected to defeat a defending enemy company. During the defense, the battalion task force is expected to defend against and defeat a threat regiment. The battalion has no deep fight, but may be charged with the execution of the fight against follow-on enemy battalions. The battalion normally designates a company-size reserve as a counterattack force.
Bring it on Ahkbar!

Huh? "If this report is true then we know why our carriers are at sea."
We always have carriers at sea. They rotate about every six months.

Not ten groups at once or haven't you been paying attention.

Whomever in Iran is running that operation must not be the sharpest knife in the drawer.
Seems like everyone on this thread is saying how stupid this is on the part of Iran.
I don't think it is stupid at all. It seems to be a very calculated move on their part, they read the polls as well, they know that many Americans are getting weary of war already. They know the UN is impotent to do anything.

We always have carriers at sea. They rotate about every six months. The Navy claims to be testing a new deployment model for its CVBG's. Instead of working up to a 6-month cruise (followed by up to a year in drydock), the Carriers will spend most of their time in port or doing shorter exercises. The idea is less wear 'n tear on the equipment (including the sailors), and increased "surge capacity" -- the ability to shove a whole chunk of your Fleet out to a troublespot all at once.
The Navy may very well be sending a message to North Korea while we transfer a brigade from South Korea to Iraq, or they may be sending a message to .

Do you know in what part of Iran the nuclear reactor is located? Uranium conversion plant near Isfahan and plans for a heavy-water reactor near Arak.

Bingo. Our carriers are at sea for a mission, not the "training" pap we've been told.

The Saudi daily Al-Sharq al-Awsat, monitored in Beirut, reports Iran has massed four battalions at the border." The morons can't possibly be that stupid, they just can't. ...can they?
They can if they believe what they read in Western media and from certain Leftist politicians in the West. They'd not be risking this if they did not believe the Bush adminstration felt constrained. Of course, they also fail to realize that they are facing a raw guts poker player, not a nuanced, faux chess playing fop.
