Bush offers glowing tribute to Clinton at unveiling of portrait

(06-14) 11:54 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) --

President Bush offered a glowing tribute to former President Clinton on Monday as the White House unveiled the official portraits of the 42nd president and his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Bush rode into office on a promise "to restore honor and dignity" to the White House after eight years of Clinton, and he was bitter at Clinton for defeating his father in the 1992 presidential contest. Moreover, Clinton plans to campaign for the man trying to oust Bush from office, Democrat John Kerry.

But on Monday, Bush delivered a lengthy, forceful defense of his predecessor, and welcomed dozens of Clinton administration officials back into the White House. It was Clinton's first return to the White House since leaving office, said a spokeswoman, Tammy Sun.

"As a candidate for any office, whether it be the state attorney general or the president, Bill Clinton showed incredible energy and great personal appeal," Bush said. "As chief executive, he showed a deep and far-ranging knowledge of public policy, a great compassion for people in need and the forward-looking spirit that Americans like in a president."

Bush left Clinton laughing so hard that his face turned red with a jibe about Clinton's optimism in campaigning in Texas for George McGovern in 1972.

That Chelsea makeover is pretty stunning. She's still a horseface, but not nearly as chumly as she was.

I'd say she has moved herself from "closing time" all the way back to 12:30...

You are so right. I found the remarks wickedly funny and scathing while at the same time complementary. Brilliant.

He wasn't kissing their butt. He said what had to be said considering the event it was true statements that on the surface sounded like he was kissing up but they were not praises of his terms in office by a long shot. They were basically subtle backhands at his soiling of the Office of the President.

Personally the contrast between President Bush and both clintons was evident when they spoke today, President Bush sounded like a confident effective leader while the evil duo sounded selfish and self adulating. They sounded like schmucks next to President Bush.

Bush told the liar's lies to the liar, totally tongue-in-cheek and the liar loved it. Dems have been disarmed.

No wonder he supported universal health coverage.

Exactly. It's not like he said that Clinton accomplished anything, he just said he tried and he was enthusiastic. I'd hardly call that "glowing," you silly AP reporter. These glowing remarks will be contrasted with the filth Clinton will throw the president's way during Clinton's book tour.

His reference to Mrs. Rodham "still raising two boys" was great. I'll be the two Rodham crooks must have cringed with that one. Remember how they both tried mightily to get known criminals pardoned by the Felon in exchange for major bribes?

Why do I have this feeling that I've just been kicked in the guts by GWB!

(I may sit-out this election.)

Lawgirl is right - Anyone who says he offered a glowing tribute did NOT listen -- go back and read the remarks and take note of what was NOT said.

Read between the lines. My favorite part was when Bush said that it was evident that Clinton really, really enjoyed being president. LOL! That is no compliment.

I know full well what I have said. Now let me ask you this: Is there any reason other than politics that would have led Bush to praise Clinton as he did?

Clinton still carries a lot of popularity and good will in this country, believe it or not. Bush knows this and has acted accordingly. Though the die-hard Dems won't vote for Bush no matter what he says or does, a lot of the independents have always been fond of CLinton: They are who Bush was speaking to when praising the Bubba.

A good hairstylist and makeup consultant can turn a dreadful-looking girl into ... a young woman who's now doing her best with what she has to work with. If you didn't know who she was, you'd say, "Not too bad ... sharp hair!"
