Bush offers glowing tribute to Clinton at unveiling of portrait

(06-14) 11:54 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) --

President Bush offered a glowing tribute to former President Clinton on Monday as the White House unveiled the official portraits of the 42nd president and his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Bush rode into office on a promise "to restore honor and dignity" to the White House after eight years of Clinton, and he was bitter at Clinton for defeating his father in the 1992 presidential contest. Moreover, Clinton plans to campaign for the man trying to oust Bush from office, Democrat John Kerry.

But on Monday, Bush delivered a lengthy, forceful defense of his predecessor, and welcomed dozens of Clinton administration officials back into the White House. It was Clinton's first return to the White House since leaving office, said a spokeswoman, Tammy Sun.

"As a candidate for any office, whether it be the state attorney general or the president, Bill Clinton showed incredible energy and great personal appeal," Bush said. "As chief executive, he showed a deep and far-ranging knowledge of public policy, a great compassion for people in need and the forward-looking spirit that Americans like in a president."

Bush left Clinton laughing so hard that his face turned red with a jibe about Clinton's optimism in campaigning in Texas for George McGovern in 1972.

Old Friend, obviously we have a different definition of the word "praise." It was soft praise and it was somewhat mocking, but it was praise, nonetheless - but praise for a reason other than what most would consider the obvious. Try to pay attention!

Yeah and he continues to lag in the polls especially with conservatives. One thing that Clinton and Reagon knew was how to use the bully pulpit and how to win elections. Both of these guys won because people voted FOR them unlike Bush where many feel we must vote for him because of the alternative. Im voting for Bush because I cant stand the alternative and I do believe that inside he is a good and honest man, but he is not unlike his father in trying to always play the political fence. Now is the time to lead - you may think he was being polite but now is not the time to look the other way; Clinton sold our country and wrecked our legal system. It takes a man to do whats right and that sometimes requires bold and a strong stance against the filth that have obtained govt. prominance. To ignore Clinton's treasonous actions and instead pay tribute to him is like rewarding Hitler for starting world war II.

Quoting Bush about Clinton: "He filled this house with energy and joy."

These are the words I would use to describe a four-year-old let loose in a toy store.

Bush left Clinton laughing so hard that his face turned red with a jibe about Clinton's optimism in campaigning in Texas for George McGovern in 1972.

How funny that the AP highlights this. I noted on the "live thread" that it was inappropriately loud and boisterous and how his face turned all red--beyond the funniness of the comment. Now, we've all had laughing fits, but it indicates something, I think.

Too bad the AP didn't recount much of Clinton's bizarre remarks. Things like an anecdote of a young boy who told him he thought all presidents were dead, or about the cartoonist who had depicted Clinton as the victim of a chainsaw massacre. The comments were, um....interesting and insightful.

It was odd, and President Bush's gentlemanly and gracious words stood in stark relief.

Oh, Hillary spoke, but I can't recall what she said. Just know that for all time her portrait shows her wearing the black pantsuit. Even Ann Compton on ABC radio news said it's the first First Lady portrait where the subject is wearing a *pantsuit*.

It's an autonomic response that he can't control. He turns beet-red when he's angry. There are plenty of photos of him in heated arguments or just sitting around fuming where he's red as a tomato.

This is why I cant stand Bush (although I will still vote for him) - he is more worried about what others think than what is right.

Are you serious with this statement? President Bush has risked his presidency by pursuing a foreign policy that completely disregarded "what others think" because he believed it to be the right thing to do. He did the same on tax cuts, pulling us out of the Kyoto treaty, calling for a Constitutional amendment on gay marriage and on and on. There are plenty of legitimate complaints about the president, but the notion that he is more worried about what others think isn't a legitimate one.

And in response, billclinton said he felt like a pickle.

Well, I notice when you break it down like that, it sounds even stranger than it did with all the talk in between.

Cue Twilight Zone music. It was very weird, his speech.

(Maybe he was trying to sound "folksy" ala Dan Rather...)

Why do I have this feeling that I've just been kicked in the guts by GWB! (I may sit-out this election.)

Then, you failed to pay attention to the deft movement of an exceptionally sharp scalpel.

There was Hillary, Bill, Hugh Rodham, Tony Rodham, and ever so many lesser criminals gathered in one room

That was another reference President Bush made that made me "LOL". He acknowledged Dorothy Rodham being there and "those two boys you're trying to raise". Then he welcomed "Hugh and Tony".

ha!
