Do we support the Tories in England, who (with exceptions) have been against the war?

Huh? Everything I've read is exactly the opposite of this statement.

What powers does the EU "Legislature" actually have?

Unfortunately this war, and support for or against it, has been political fodder on both sides of the Atlantic. Though Tony Blair has also suffered criticism from the far left within his party, the war critique from the right has been very harsh.

These election results show that the German people aren't unfriendly to the US. Just the current failing government that is.

I think he is probably trying to:

1) Hang on to 2006 if he can, by acting on "new issues", spewing out a few more scapegoats (Americans, Israel - saying Jews outright is a big no-no, Polish, British, Italians, Dutch, Koreans. According to the speed in which he blames others, by October 2005 he will be blaming Germany's economic woes on Macau)

2) If 1) doesn't work, try buying off supports from some Christian Democrats - especially the big government types.

3) When crunch time 2006 comes, during the World Cup finals hold an informal "talk" with referees for the World Cup and get them to pass "favourable decisions" when refereeing in matches involving the German team. when Germany wins the World Cup everyone will feel good and vote Schroeder back in power, eh?

All actions depicted were wild speculations. It will be a coincidence if things turn out just like this :D

Haha, yeah. I believe Schröder is in his last year as Chancellor. Next year, we have state elections in North-Rhine-Westphalia, which is also the biggest state with 18 million citizen. When his still ruling party suffers a defeat there, he can grab his luggage and go. The opposition would have a 2/3 majority in the Upper House of parliament, which means we could veto ALL bills. Therefore, May 2005 is the date we can hope for!

The EU parliament has veto power to 80% of the bills in the EU, and influence on 55% of the national laws (through the EU directives). It can also vote out the EU commission. They´re far away from being similar to a real parliament, though.

You´re a bit harsh. I agree with you that Schäuble should have become President, but as we have seen, Köhler got a narrow 2-votes-majority. I won´t imagine how many Liberals had voted against Schäuble!?

Köhler is a good choice.

low turnout.

here in the U.S. we have had incredibley low voter turn out for years. it may be fun for you to watch this years election, which is probably the most important election in this country EVER! i think both partys are energized and baring horrible weather the turn out could be the largest in many a decade. ( bad weather usually effects the democrates voter base more so than the right.)

Lack of accountability is inherent in the EU. You will sometimes hear it said that the Commission, the EU's governing body, is undemocratic. In fact, uniquely in the Western world, it contrives to be anti-democratic, in the sense that you generally have to lose an election to be sent there: witness Neil Kinnock or Chris Patten.

-- Daniel Hannan (MEP for South East England) written in the UK Telegraph

BTW, this guy has an excellent website. I like his discussion of proportional representation. (He's foursquare against it.)

But what are you doing to get your voters to the ballots? I mean, it seems as if many people do not consider voting as an essential part of a Republic!

The commission should be elected by the parliament and be responsible to the parliament and not to the European Council.

Hopefully next year, officially autumn 2006. It´s despairing - even for the normal people! This a$$ was elected in September 2002, and weeks later, polls saw a lead of the opposition again - and now the SPD hits the bottomline, with 14.5% in the East, they´re no longer a large party, but the Commies (25%) are!

Next year, we can get a veto right through a 2/3 majority in our Upper House (comparable to the Senate). Then he just has to resign and order new elections.

well for myself, and some others in my family, we volunteer at our local republican headquartes and make phone calls to get out our message and stuff envelopes with political literiture to be mailed out. we try to target swing voters like the old Reagan democrats and undecided voters, no since spending on our core base. we will vote Bush and give our time and voice to help get his message out. this still does not forgive the fact that our voting populace are not turning out as we should.

Fine, you need to change a lot of laws regulation the economy to get Germany going again. I anticipate that the important ones are for the Mittelstand as CDU/CSU have described here http://www.mittelstand-deutschland.de/
