He called Hinkley's shrink at the mental hospital and said he wanted to meet with Hinkley in person, in order to forgive him. Reagan asked whether this would be in Hinkley's best interest. The hospital shrink said it wouldn't, so the meeting never took place.

I just heard that too. They're treating this like it's breaking news. But didn't we know this years ago?

Maybe I'm just mis-remembering.

Okay, but you had better put Hinkley in this kind of a getup:

Rev. Danforth mentioned this during the homily at the National Funeral on Friday. I had never heard it before.

And the pope also met in person with the man that tried to take his life as well.

Chracter unmatched by both Gentlemen.

That whole conversation was 'strange'.

The doctor didn't want Hinkley reminded about what he had done?? President Reagans wounds were not permanent and he didn't ahve the right to speak for those whose were???

Somewhere in my papers is a note (fake) on White House note paper from Reagan to Hinckley, wishing him well and sending regards to his parents. There is a PS that says something like, "By the way, I understand that Walter Mondale and Gary Hart are both banging Jody Foster."

I listened to Nancy's interview from circa 1995 with Larry King What she stated was that Hinckley's doctors felt that it would give Hinckley the notoriety that he had been seeking from the start. Not a good thing. Nancy said that the doctors are the ones who would not give permission for the visit.

The president was a great man, and last week, we all realized how much we miss him.

Meanwhile our PBS affiliate is airing a documentary (largely hit piece but approx. 30 degrees off center titling left so there are some redeeming qualities). I couldn't help but note that PBS did not cover the Reagan funeral or any of the related events at any time during the week and, then, once the events are completed, it appears they spent their time dumping out the old Frontline propaganda efforts to assemble what only PBS would likely consider a fitting memorial.

They're probably BEWILDERED about the American public's reaction to Reagan's death. It was inspirational, and I was sorry I couldn't get to Washington to pay my respects.

Jim Lehrer covered it.

Leave it to a shrink to think that forgiveness would not be in a Man's best interest.

It has been a very long time since this thread was posted, but this relates.

You won’t have much help from Ambrose, I think. He hasn’t posted in six years, though his account is still here.

Truly a Christian man!

While I was in Southern California (LA) for 10 years...
I heard that Reagan would occassionally stop at gas stations looking for
his mother that was slowly growing losing here grip on reality, while she was
out on benevolent efforts (on the behalf of the Disciples of Christ).

Additionally, I give RR credit for saying that the reason he rarely attended
formal church services during his Presidency was that he realized that his
presecence (and the Secret Service) detracted from the church services.

RR may have not been closely approachable, but for a President
he couldn’t have been a more decent mensch/guy (IMHO).
