Conservative radio commentator Rush Limbaugh announced Friday that he and his wife, Marta, are divorcing.
The Limbaughs "mutually decided to end their marriage of 10 years" and have "separated pending an amicable resolution," according to a statement released by Limbaugh's publicist.
The couple shared a $24 million oceanfront mansion in nearby Palm Beach, from where Limbaugh often broadcast his daily three-hour show.
Spokesman Tony Knight said the matter was personal and declined further comment.
It was the third marriage for both Limbaugh, 53, and his 44-year-old wife, who were wed May 27, 1994, at the Virginia home of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. Thomas officiated the ceremony.
The past several months have been difficult for the politically and socially conservative Limbaugh, who announced in October that he was entering drug rehabilitation because he was addicted to prescription painkillers.
At the same time, West Palm Beach prosecutors announced they were investigating whether Limbaugh illegally went "doctor shopping" to obtain the pills. The practice refers to visiting several doctors to receive duplicate prescriptions of controlled narcotics.
Limbaugh, who has not been charged with any crime, has repeatedly fought back against the charges and negative publicity he's received over the matter.
Last month, he took out full-page ads in two Florida newspapers to attack prosecutors for mounting what he called a politically motivated investigation. He also regularly lashes out against prosecutors and reporters and defends himself during his show.
The criminal case against Limbaugh is on hold pending a decision from a Florida appeals court. It will decide whether the seizure of Limbaugh's medical records, which were taken by investigators in November, violated privacy laws.
Prosecutors say they need the records to determine whether to bring charges against Limbaugh.

If it cost a couple million dollars and took six months to a year to get married, and ten bucks and three days to get divorced, an awful lot of marriages would never have taken place.
Well, hell, how many FReepers would be married in that case?

Perhaps Marta grew tired of Rush's obsession with bacon. His two previous spouses both cited bacon fights in their divorce decrees.

I would tend to believe this - I think he was truly, truly in love with this woman, and that she was his reason for losing weight.
Opiate addiction is a surefire diet aid.

He's uneducated and glories in it.
Lack of a college degree does not make one "uneducated." It is entirely possible to educate oneself.

Many people I see have degrees and are liberals.
I was a liberal until 25 or so BECAUSE I went to college for too long and got too many degrees. I had to teach myself to think critically; before then, I sopped up whatever the network news saw fit to give the audience.

I had wondered since the drug problem, what would become of Marta. I know that she has kids- I wonder if they are a part of the concern. If she has an a@@-hole ex-husband, maybe he is threatening to take the kids away since she is living with someone with a substance abuse problem. You never know what is going on in the background.
I hope for the best for Rush but this comes at a bad time. The battle for the 2004 election is going to require the concentration of all of our assets.

Like a piece of paper automatically makes a person smarter and more intelligent than others. Get real, that piece of paper only makes you more competant in that one minute area of life.

...Here's a mental exercise for you: try to come up with a divorce scenario that is not dependent on a moral failure by one party or both. (It can't be done - the breach of a solemn oath itself is a moral failure.)....
How about the scenario where 50% of the country loathes you and will do anything to destroy you because they perceive you the enemy and the other 49.99999% won't protect you.
Rush gets the adulation and reward but his whole live and Marta's are open to any sort of speculation. Scratch yourself wrong and you'll be on Time magazine. I for one am glad that he continues to fight.

I know that she has kids- I wonder if they are a part of the concern. Marta has two kids who are both 18 or older and away at college. Her daughter left just last fall-before the drug story-and Rush told about her leaving her cats home. Rush also spoke of the son last year, being on spring break and bringing his college kids home.
Wonder what will happen to all the cats, Pumpkin, Angel and Andy? Bonnie Blue has passed on but I remember Rush saying that Marta gave him a sculpture of Bonnie Blue Limbaugh for his birthday, last year.
I figured something was up when Rush stopped running the Select Comfort commercials where he told the world what his and Marta's sleep numbers are. Now he just says his...lol...

No it is not. The woman had nothing large in her life until Rush. Rush provided her status in life today. I am sure Rush was very hard to live with but marriage is for better or worse. She only stayed for the better. I really right on the money and you are wrong.
