I hear this argument about how easy it is to lead people into tyranny. A gradual imposition of tyranny is on unlikely occurrence. Almost everybody opposes such an outcome. Can anybody find an example where a Republican or Democratic form of government slowly drifted into tyranny? A government that is too weak to protect its citizens is vulnerable. So is a corrupt government that functions like a Kleptocracy.
The toppling of the Roman Republic and the ascension of Caesar seemed justified because of the corruption of the elected politicians. Hitler took over because the government was both incompetent and weak. When the people no longer respect or trust their government they will acquiesce to its replacement by any available alternative. Strongmen seize power from weak, corrupt and incompetent governments.
